We’re building tomorrow’s fleet today
With more than 11,000 employees, HII’s Ingalls Shipbuilding division is the largest manufacturing employer in Mississippi and a major contributor to the economic growth of Alabama. For nearly 85 years, we’ve designed, built and maintained amphibious ships, destroyers, and cutters for the U.S. Navy and the U.S. Coast Guard. The largest supplier of U.S. Navy surface combatants, we’re simultaneously building four classes of ships and have pioneered the development and production of technologically advanced, highly capable ships for the surface Navy fleet for decades.

Lays out, fabricates, and assembles a variety of standard and nonstandard major jigs, fixtures, tool masters, master tooling gauges, and related tooling involving compound angles and complex contours where the establishment and coordination to exacting tolerances of numerous tooling holes and reference points between several planes are required. Performs measurement surveys using photogrammetry, total stations, laser trackers or other electronic 3-D instruments.
Uses computer aided designs (CAD) graphic user interface software for design. Plans work to be performed and determines methods and sequence of operations working from tool design drawings or own designs. Sets up and operates optical instruments to check overall and detailed alignment, fit, or adjustment of assemblies. Develops and designs holding devices and jig and fixture details. Prepares operational sequences and shop drawings covering parts fabrication and assembly to be performed by others.
May monitor and verify quality in accordance with statistical process or other control procedures.
The Data Development Technician supports hull fabrication and assembly by generating and maintaining technical documentation required for dimensional validation and accuracy control processes. This role develops engineering grade Check Sheets, dimensional control procedures, girthing and rotational datasets, and erection sequence guidance to ensure compliance with naval construction tolerances and production standards. The technician also performs technical reviews and authorization of documentation produced by other team members prior to release.
Primary ResponsibilitiesDevelop technical construction validation documents, including Check Sheets, dimensional control workflows, and metrology based verification requirements. Produce girthing, alignment, and rotational data derived from engineering models and design references. Provide construction and erection guidance compliant with shipbuilding standards, geometry control practices, and process specifications. Coordinate and update daily technical tasking, production priorities, and documentation schedules. Interface with engineering, production, and external stakeholders to interpret part fabrication requirements and dimensional tolerances.
Conduct technical reviews, approve accuracy control documentation, and ensure readiness for production release. Maintain operational understanding of fitting, welding, structural fabrication practices, and hull construction methodologies.
High School diploma or equivalent and 5 years additional education and/or related experience;
Apprentice graduate/ Associate's Degree in relevant discipline and 3 years of related experience. May require certification.
Strong mathematics background, including applied geometry and spatial analysis. Proficiency in MS Office (Excel, Word, Access) for data management and documentation. Proficiency with AutoCAD and Bluebeam for 2D technical interpretation and markups. 3D modeling and design proficiency required. Working knowledge of ship lines, coordinate systems, nomenclature, and English/metric measurement standards. Ability to independently interpret engineering drawings, models, and dimensional requirements with minimal supervision.
