GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIESA Dispatcher operates telephone and two-way radio in the receipt and transmission of police, fire, rescue squad and other calls and dispatches services as necessary; does related work as required, and any other duties assigned by the Police Chief or the Supervisor.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES- Responsible for the complete control of the receiving and transmitting of messages and alarms using the facilities of the police department communications system
- Calls are received by telephone, intercom, and various radio systems for police services, firefighting, or other rescue or other emergency equipment where upon the Dispatcher contacts by radio or telephone the unit or units to be dispatched, giving the type and location of the emergency and other pertinent information
- Determines by inquiry the exact location of the place or point of emergency and dispatches the proper unit or units via the most direct route
- Transmits such messages as may be necessary in conducting operations at point of emergency; informs police and utility personnel of emergencies
- Transmits special information in various files and with ready reference file concerning calls and complaints
- Records all information concerning all calls and complaints
- Acts as clerk receiving fines and bail bonds, issuing affidavits and arrest warrants on crimes and misdemeanors, and issuing subpoenas to witnesses
- Good knowledge of Federal and State regulations governing transmission by radio
- Some knowledge of firefighting and police procedures and equipment
- Alertness and skill in detecting the scope and magnitude of an emergency; emotional stability
- Pleasant personality and good speaking voice; excellent diction and clear enunciation
- Courtesy and tact in dealing with others; thoroughness and patience and the ability to learn quickly
- High school diploma or GED;
Some clerical or business experience, preferably as a radio dispatcher - Must have a valid drivers’ license
- Must be certified within a specified time period as set forth by the Mississippi Board of Telecommunications Standards and Training
