Billing and Coding Specialist – Pascagoula Hospital | Full-Time | 8am to 4:30pm | 2809 Denny Ave, Pascagoula, Mississippi, 39581, United States
Position OverviewThe Billing and Coding Specialist compiles all bills and diagnosis codes. They summarize the data for submission to the billing entity and verify the existence of the documentation that supports billing intentions on the patient chart. The Specialist analyzes and interprets patient medical records to identify and determine the amount and nature of billable services.
The Specialist assigns diagnosis‑related groups and ambulatory payment classifications; completes abstracts for patient data; and works with all medical records regarding coding diagnoses and procedures. They ensure the accuracy and completeness of assigned codes and validate against clinical documentation and claim data, establishing principal and secondary diagnoses. All duties are performed in accordance with Singing River Health System procedures, policies, accreditation organization, and governing guidance.

EducationHigh school diploma or equivalent required. Completed coursework in medical terminology, anatomy, physiology, disease processes, ICD‑9/10-Clinical Modification coding, and/or CPT coding preferred.

CertificationsCertification by the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) or American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC) preferred:

Once certified, the employee must complete all requirements (including continuing education) to maintain certification.
Must have de‑escalation training completed by the end of position orientation (90 days); must have appropriate level of de‑escalation training.
ExperienceA minimum of two (2) years’ experience in a medical records department, cash posting in banks, or other related companies preferred; medical coding and knowledge of DRGs/APCs/ICD
10 preferred. Experience with a code finder and medical terminology preferred.

Physical DemandsWork is mainly sedentary, involving sitting most of the time with regular requirements to move about the office and facility. The position may require moving objects, including the human body, and exposure to body fluids, sputum, and tissues that may carry infectious disease. Repetitive motions of wrists, hands, and fingers while operating office equipment are common.
The job requires the ability to perceive sound at normal speaking levels, with or without correction, and to focus eyes on close and distant objects. Employees must be able to remain active for extended periods without undue fatigue and be willing to work scheduled shifts, including weekends.
Mental DemandsMust demonstrate keen mental faculties and decision‑making abilities. Superior communication skills are required, both spoken and written. Employees must possess emotional stability to handle high stress levels and ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines.
Special DemandsMust possess superior customer service skills and professional etiquette. Proficiency with computers, including MS Outlook and Word, and other office technology is essential. Ability to demonstrate appropriate clinical judgment and apply professional skills to a patient population of all ages is required.
Knowledge of anatomy, physiology, medical terminology, and DRGs/APCs is required.
