Salary: $6,132‑$7,114 monthly. Non‑permanent position represented by Teamsters 117 bargaining unit.
Correctional Industries (CI) is dedicated to expanding incarcerated worker training programs that equip individuals with marketable job skills, foster strong work ethics, and support successful reentry while reducing the cost of corrections for Washington taxpayers. The Equipment Operator 2 is an opportunity to make a difference every day.
Responsibilities- Inspect, diagnose, repair, and perform preventive maintenance on heavy equipment used to maintain roads and grounds.
- Operate trucks, tractors, shovels, bulldozers, carry‑alls, snowplows, graders and similar equipment safely per operations manual.
- Prioritize and evaluate incarcerated work assignments and maintain training documentation for each worker.
- Monitor and implement offender safety training on shop rules and equipment.
- Train incarcerated workers on various equipment.
- Maintain roads on McNeil Island (blacktop and gravel).
- Order materials used to complete heavy equipment projects.
- Preventive maintenance, inspecting, diagnosing and repairing equipment.
- Other duties as assigned.
- High School Graduate or equivalent.
- WA State Driver’s License with a Class A CDL.
- One year full‑time experience as a journey‑level heavy equipment operator.
- Successfully complete Correctional Worker Core (CWC) training program for interaction with offenders.
- Knowledge of safe operation rules, state motor vehicle laws, and equipment maintenance. Ability to operate heavy construction equipment safely, perform adjustments and repairs, follow oral and written instructions, keep simple records, work to grade.
- Three years of experience operating and maintaining heavy equipment such as bulldozers, graders, excavators, cranes.
- Full journey status as a heavy equipment operator by work experience, vocational or trade school apprenticeship, or combination thereof.
- Unrestricted motor vehicle operator’s license with a CDL; equivalent education/experience substitutes for all minimum qualifications except legal requirements.
- Computer skills:
Word, Excel. Demonstrated organization, time management, interpersonal, communication and analytical skills. - Strong ethical conduct, negotiation and conflict resolution skills, effective communication with management, peers, offenders and the public.
