Job Summary
Local P&D or City Drivers operate tractor‑trailer combinations between company service centers and customer facilities or work sites within the service center's geographic area. They sort, handle, load, and/or unload freight at company and customer locations.
Primary Responsibilities- Operate vehicle safely within DOT regulations, including safe driving, hours of service, inspection, maintenance, and hazardous material transportation.
- Meet or exceed the medical standards of the U.S. Department of Transportation and satisfactorily pass a drug and alcohol test.
- Load and unload freight on trailers using a motorized forklift, pallet jack, or manually in compliance with state and federal DOT guidelines.
- Use various loading techniques, such as tight or cross loading, and secure freight inside trailers with pallets, straps, rope, or other supplies.
- Transport freight continuously over non‑forgiving surfaces and monitor shipment locations using the Dock Yard Management System.
- Read and interpret shipping labels and complete necessary freight movement forms (shipping orders, city stripping manifests, freight bills, overage/damage reports, exception forms).
- Perform hand‑loading, re‑wrapping, or stacking of freight as required.
- Maintain frequent contact with service center personnel; be fast‑paced and deadline‑oriented.
- Be available to meet customer pickup and delivery schedules.
- High school diploma or equivalent (preferred).
- Valid Class A Commercial Driver's License with double/triple trailers, tanker, and hazardous material endorsements.
- Acceptable motor vehicle record.
- 12 months of tractor‑trailer driving experience or completion of a state‑certified driving school or the Old Dominion Truck Driver Training program.
- Ability to read, write, speak English and perform simple mathematical calculations.
- Proficient in operating handheld tablets and familiar with two‑way radio or phone instructions.
- Knowledge of vehicle safety and control systems, DOT regulations on safe driving, hours of service, inspection, maintenance, and hazardous material transportation.
- Pass medical standards of the U.S. Department of Transportation and satisfy drug and alcohol tests.
- Orientation/training program completed by an approved Old Dominion driver trainer.
- At least 22 years of age.
The role requires sitting, standing, walking, bending, stooping, kneeling, climbing, moving materials up to 500pounds, lifting and carrying freight from 1 to 100pounds over distances up to 100feet, and loading/unloading full trailers up to 50,000pounds. Other tasks include operating the vehicle’s fifth wheel, seat adjustments, fuel checks, and cognitive skills for navigation and safety.
Work EnvironmentThe job may involve exposure to various environments, including enclosed vehicles, loading areas, extreme weather, noise, and variable lighting conditions.
Compensation and Benefits- Annual pay: $81,000 on average.
- Compensation range: $20.15 – $36.35 per hour (may vary by location, experience, and market).
