Director Of Student Support Services

Mission:

Nature and Scope of Job:
The Director of Student Support Services (DSSS) ensures that all students receive the support and services necessary to meet their individualized learning and social/emotional goals. Under the direction and supervision of the Managing Director of Curriculum and Instruction, the DSSS directs and supports the planning, development, organization, management and implementation of all aspects of Student Support Services and programs which include alternative education, child welfare and attendance, Intervention (RTI) and Referral Services (I&RS), grant funded programs, guidance services, Section 504 procedures, ML programs, discipline/culture and case management.

The DSSS assures compliance with laws, codes, and regulations related to Student Support Services; evaluates assigned personnel; and performs related work as required.

Job Functions and Responsibilities:

  • Special Education Programming
    • Supervise the special education department's educational programming and services and oversee the implementation of all special education supports.
    • Coordinate with general education and special education teachers to ensure that students' IEP goals are being met.
    • Coach and provide ongoing feedback to special education teachers, MLL teachers, one on one aides, and related service providers.
    • Participate in co-observations of general education teachers with the academic leadership team as needed.
    • Participate in the ongoing professional development of special education staff members.
    • Provide coaching and professional development to general education teachers, support staff and instructional leaders on the creation and implementation of accommodations and modifications.
    • Support special education and general education teachers in analyzing student data and tracking progress towards students' individualized goals.
  • Direct Service
    • Provide direct service to students on Individual Education Plans (IEPs) in accordance with students' IEPs.
    • Facilitate intervention groups as needed.
    • Respond to students who may be exhibiting social/emotional needs.
  • Response to Intervention
    • Create, facilitate and/or support a formal Response to Intervention (RTI) program.
    • Observe students referred to I&RS/RTI process and gather relevant data.
    • Schedule/Attend I&RS/RTI meetings and facilitate the collection of I&RS/RTI data.
    • Collaborate with general education teachers to monitor, evaluate, and document student progress.
    • Provide teachers feedback on the implementation of selected RTI interventions.
    • Coordinate and provide training on school-wide intervention programs, including programs specifically designed to address gaps in learning.
  • Special Education Administrative Responsibilities
    • Remain current in knowledge of special education law and related regulations.
    • Ensure organizational systems meet state and federal compliance standards.
    • Review annual IEPs and re-evaluations, including student goals and objectives.
    • Meet with teachers and parents, both formally and informally to communicate student progress.
    • Develop, in collaboration with the Managing Director of Curriculum and Instruction and other administrators, special education service delivery model.
    • Coordinate testing accommodations.
    • Manage special education reporting and in collaboration with the Managing Director of Curriculum and Instruction or CEO, prepare the department's budget needs and funding.
    • Facilitate preparations for program reviews and audits.
    • Collaborate with Case Manager to ensure all IEP deadlines are met.
    • Fulfill case management responsibilities in the summer months.
    • Direct supervision of social workers and related service providers.
