Heavy Equipment Mechanic, Automotive Mechanic
Automotive Mechanic - Public Works Department The Cherry Hill Township Department of Public Works is looking for an experienced, motivated Mechanic to join our Automotive Division.
POSITION SUMMARY: The individual in this position performs all phases of preventative and unscheduled maintenance on heavy trucks, passenger buses, construction equipment, and automobiles. Must be capable of assuming the duties and responsibilities of the Supervisor / Foreman if assigned. Must be able, when assigned, to operate a dump truck with snowplow and spreader or leaf collection equipment during snow plowing and leaf collection operations.
Individual must possess a thorough working knowledge of all systems and sub-systems to include electrical, hydraulic, diesel and gasoline engines, hydraulic and air brake systems, differentials and transmissions, air conditioning, computerized engine controls, and emergency lighting.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Does mechanical work on automobiles, other motorized and mechanized equipment, trucks, tractors, trailers, loaders, sweepers, graders, and other construction equipment, buses, and emergency equipment, stationary or mobile.
- Performs work involved in the installation, maintenance and repairs of motors, fuel, exhaust, cooling, electrical, suspension, air conditioning, steering and braking systems and associated instruments; may be required to change and repair tires.
- Road tests vehicles to determine operational defects, effectiveness or repairs required; diagnoses and isolates causes of malfunctions by performing a series and tests using standard test equipment and procedures.
- Adjust operating mechanisms, does welding and fabrication of various types, identifies and obtains necessary parts for repairs, lifts and moves supplies.
- Assists with other maintenance and labor duties when there is no need for mechanical services.
- Maintains a clean and organized work area using standard housekeeping practices.
- Ensures proper safety procedures are followed and reasonable standards of workmanship are maintained to achieve safe and serviceable equipment.
- May be required to fill in as a crew leader or project leader on any given project in the absence of supervision.
EDUCATION/CERTIFICATION:
- High School diploma or GED
- Graduate of Technical Institute and 3 years’ experience, or 5 years’ experience in the automotive or construction equipment maintenance industry.
REQUIREMENTS:
- Must have the ability to diagnose and determine reasons for equipment failures and determine steps required to correct these conditions.
- Must have the ability to gain working knowledge by attending seminars and training classes.
- Must have the ability to troubleshoot and analyze complex problems and plan a course of action to facilitate repairs of vehicles and construction equipment.
- Must be able to work independently of direct supervision in performing service and maintenance tasks.
- Must have the ability to organize and carry out complex work projects involving repair and overhaul of mechanical equipment.
- Must be able to understand, remember and carry out oral and written directions of some complexity and learn quickly from explanations and demonstrations.
- Must have the ability to operate mechanical equipment in a skilled and safe manner.
- Must be able to check, clean, and service mechanical equipment and vehicles and keep accurate and current maintenance records.
- Must be able to lift 100 lbs.
- Must have the ability to understand and apply information contained in technical manuals and bulletins, lubrication orders, directives and other publications applicable to the repair, servicing and maintenance of mechanical equipment.
- Must be able to work harmoniously with associates, other divisions and departments, and the general public.
- May perform other duties as assigned by Supervisor and/or Director/Assistant Director of Public Works.
OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
- Responds to and may work along with the Public Works employees in the clearing and removal of snow and/or emergent conditions or situations.
- May be on twenty-four (24) hour call.
- May be required to work extra hours as required during emergencies, i.e. snowstorms, leaf collection, flooding, etc.
- Valid NJ Commercial Driver’s License, Class "B" to perform necessary functions of position.
- New Jersey residency required pursuant to NJSA 54:14-7 (L. 2011, Chapter 70).
