Senior Commercial HVAC Technician
The Senior Commercial HVAC Technician is responsible for performing expert-level service, maintenance, installation, and diagnostics on complex commercial HVAC systems. This role acts as a technical leader in the field, supports large-scale commercial projects, and mentors less experienced technicians. The Senior Technician ensures all work meets safety, quality, and compliance standards while providing exceptional customer service to commercial clients.
Key responsibilities include diagnosing, repairing, and maintaining complex commercial HVAC systems including RTUs, VAV systems, heat pumps, VRF/VRV systems, boilers, chillers, cooling towers, air handlers, and ventilation systems. The Senior Technician leads advanced troubleshooting, root-cause analysis, and major component replacements. They perform commercial system installations, start-ups, commissioning, and retrofits according to manufacturer specifications and project requirements. Detailed preventive maintenance and recommendations for system improvements, energy efficiency, and lifecycle upgrades are also part of the role.
Ensuring all work adheres to company standards, project specifications, OSHA safety regulations, and local building codes is critical. Coaching, technical guidance, and on-the-job training to junior and mid-level technicians, as well as close collaboration with dispatch, project managers, and estimators, are essential. Building strong client relationships and communicating findings, options, and recommendations clearly and professionally are also key. Accurate documentation of service reports, time entries, parts usage, and job progress is required, along with maintaining company tools, equipment, and service vehicle in safe operating condition.
Qualifications include 10+ years of commercial HVAC service and/or installation experience required. Strong proficiency with commercial systems including chillers, boilers, VRF/VRV, and complex control systems is necessary. EPA Universal Certification is required. Technical school, trade certification, or completed HVAC apprenticeship is highly preferred. Ability to read and interpret commercial blueprints, plans, and control schematics is essential. Exceptional diagnostic skills and proven ability to resolve complex system issues independently are required.
Strong leadership, communication, and customer-service abilities are also needed.
Eligibility requirements include a valid driver's license. Employment/education will be verified. Applicants must be currently authorized to work in the United States on a full-time basis. Encon is a drug-free workplace and requires post-offer pre-employment drug testing.
Physical requirements include the ability to work in a variety of extreme weather, hot and cold conditions. The technician must be able to work safely in confined spaces such as attics, basements, closets, and crawl spaces. Working safely at elevated heights such as rooftops, ceilings, and ladders is required. The ability to bend, crawl, stoop, stretch, and reach is necessary. Walking on uneven surfaces and working off a ladder, sometimes at heights, is also required.
Safely lifting 50 pounds is essential.
