REPORTS TO:
CFO
About Us We are a growing modular manufacturing company specializing in volumetric residential and multi-family construction. Our plant delivers high-quality, efficiently built homes using advanced manufacturing processes. As demand accelerates, we are expanding our team and seeking a detail-oriented professional who thrives at the intersection of estimating, accounting, and operational support.
Position Overview
S2A Modular is bringing its Patterson, CA Mega Factory up to full production — a 26-station modular home production line that is the most technologically advanced in the industry. We are hiring a Controller to own plant accounting end-to-end: build and maintain the standard cost system by work center, run the monthly close, control inventory and WIP, and give operations leadership the cost visibility they need to hit margin targets.
This is a hands-on, build-it role. The Company is mid-implementation on Offsight, its ERP system, feeding Quick Books Online as the general ledger, and the Controller will be the finance owner of that data flow. Because the work is on the floor — cycle counts, WIP validation, variance walks with supervisors — this position is onsite in Patterson every working day.
It is not hybrid or remote-eligible.
Key Responsibilities
Cost Accounting & Standard Costs
- Own the standard cost model by work center across all 24 production stations: material, direct labor, and applied overhead per module and per home.
- Maintain BOMs and routings with Engineering and Purchasing; drive BOM accuracy as a measured KPI.
- Calculate and explain purchase price, material usage, labor efficiency, and overhead absorption variances monthly; lead the variance review with plant leadership.
- Set and reset standard costs annually with mid-year revisions as material markets move; maintain unit-level margin reporting by model and SKU.
Systems — Offsight to Quick Books Online
- Own the Offsight-to-QBO data flow: chart of accounts mapping, production milestone triggers, and reconciliation controls between the two systems.
- Design and document the month-end interface reconciliation so production data ties to inventory, COGS, and WIP in the GL.
- Partner with operations on shop-floor data capture — station completions, labor hours, scrap, rework — so the cost system is fed by actual production events, not manual estimates.
Construction & Project Accounting
- Administer job cost accounting: cost coding, budget-to-actual by job, committed cost tracking, and change orders.
- Maintain WIP schedules and revenue recognition under ASC 606; prepare the monthly WIP-to-GL reconciliation.
- Manage customer milestone billings, deposits, and retention with the related contract asset and liability balances; track subcontractor and site costs.
Close, Reporting & Controls
- Own the monthly close on a defined calendar; deliver plant financial statements and the operations reporting package on the corporate timeline.
- Prepare balance sheet reconciliations for inventory, WIP, fixed assets, accruals, and customer deposits; maintain fixed asset and capital project records.
- Manage physical inventory and cycle counts; own inventory accuracy and reserve adequacy.
- Design and enforce internal controls over purchasing, receiving, production reporting, and inventory movement; support external accountants, auditors, and lenders.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in accounting or finance.
- 5+ years of progressive accounting experience, with at least 4 as a Controller, Plant Controller, Cost Accounting Manager, or equivalent in manufacturing. Discrete or assembly-line manufacturing preferred.
- Demonstrated ownership of a standard cost system — building it, not just reporting off it.
- Working fluency with ERP systems and manufacturing modules (BOMs, routings, work orders, inventory transactions, cost roll-ups); prior ERP implementation or major module rollout required.
- Construction or project cost accounting: job costing, WIP schedules, percentage-of-completion, progress billings, change orders, and retention.
- Advanced Excel (complex…
