Responsible for the development and maintenance of nursing service objectives, standards of nursing practice, nursing policy and procedure manual, scheduling daily rounds to see all Residents, methods for coordination of nursing services with other Resident services, for recommending the number and level of nursing personnel to be employed and nursing staff development. These services are consistent with the Home's standards and philosophy, and are compliant with all regulations, codes, policies, and procedures that govern the facility.
JobStandards
- Graduate of an accredited School of Nursing, licensed to practice in Rhode Island as a Registered Nurse.
- Prior experience in Nursing Management (e.g., DON, ADON, RN Supervisor) and at least three years RN experience with a strong focus in geriatrics, supervision, management and/or administration.
- Strong leadership and organizational skills in dealing with and directing day‑to‑day organizational management of the health care team.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Capability to make frequent decisions and function independently.
- Thorough knowledge of state and federal regulations that govern a long‑term care facility.
- Must be on call for emergencies.
- Ability to identify and initiate problem solving in the areas of physical, psychosocial needs associated with aging and loss involving the Resident, family, staff.
- Must possess the ability to perform the essential job functions with or without reasonable accommodations.
- Assure that the total nursing care needs of the Residents are met by assigning sufficient nursing personnel for each tour of duty; schedule staff in a timely and accurate manner to meet demands of the department and the Home.
- Visit Residents regularly to assure maximum care and services are provided, ensuring daily rounds are made on each nursing unit by an assigned charge/supervising nurse.
- Make certain a comprehensive assessment is completed and reviewed for each Resident as required, allowing for the highest practical level of physical, mental, and psychosocial functioning of the Resident.
- Oversee the initiation and implementation of a Plan of Care for each Resident and ensure it is reviewed/modified as indicated.
- Serve in a leadership role on the Quality Assurance Committee and its subcommittees including the Ethics Committee.
- Respond calmly and effectively in a leadership role during all emergencies of Residents, staff, and visitors to the Home.
- Take part in the selection of prospective Residents to the Home and in the transfer/discharge of Residents from the Home as indicated.
- Work in collaboration with the pharmacist to develop policy/procedures for obtaining, dispensing, administering, controlling and dispensing drugs and biologicals.
- Ensure duties of all nursing personnel are clearly defined and consistent with their level of experience, education, and preparation.
- Oversee all nursing staff performance on a regular basis in collaboration with nursing management, providing guidance and coaching as needed.
- Review all grievances from Residents, employees, and/or families in collaboration with the Mother Superior, Little Sisters, and/or the Human Resources Director.
- Develop objectives for the department and routinely review departmental operations with staff to measure effectiveness in meeting objectives; initiate and conduct staff meetings as required and/or indicated.
- Assist the management team in planning the budget for the department, striving for optimal use of supplies and materials while considering cost and budget limitations.
- Maintain effective communication and working relationships with the Mother Superior and coordinate nursing services with other departments.
- Maintain confidentiality of all Resident, departmental and organizational information; demonstrate recognition of Resident rights.
- Assist the Department of Health with the annual recertification process.
- Evaluate the need for level‑of‑care changes on all Residents on a regular basis and assure follow‑up with the same.
