TITLE:

SECONDARY MUSIC TEACHER JOB SUMMARY

To provide a comprehensive secondary instrumental music program for Payette School District, including concert band, marching band, and pep band. The teacher will develop students’ musical skills, performance abilities, and appreciation for music while promoting teamwork, discipline, and school pride through performance opportunities and community engagement.

QUALIFICATIONS
  • Idaho teaching certificate with appropriate endorsement (Music Education endorsement)
  • Strong background in instrumental music instruction, including concert band, marching band, and pep band
  • Demonstrated knowledge of music pedagogy, performance techniques, and ensemble development
  • Strong background in curriculum development aligned to Idaho Core Standards and Fine Arts Standards
  • Ability to integrate technology into music instruction (notation software, recording tools, etc.)
  • Ability to maintain a positive, structured, and engaging learning environment
  • Works well with students, staff, parents, and the public
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • Ability to manage performances, travel, and event logistics
  • Maintain the confidentiality of staff and students
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITY TO

Building Principal

MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Instruction
  • Prepare for assigned classes and rehearsals
  • Design lessons and rehearsals that provide instruction in a logical and sequential manner
  • Teach instrumental techniques, music literacy, and ensemble performance skills
  • Employ a variety of instructional strategies appropriate for individual and group learning
  • Meet and instruct assigned classes in the locations and times designated
  • Differentiate instruction to meet the needs of students at varying skill levels
  • Analyze and interpret student performance data to modify instruction
  • Implement Idaho Core and Fine Arts Standards in lesson planning and instruction
  • Provide opportunities for individual and group performance assessment
  • Prepare students for concerts, festivals, competitions, and performances
  • Maintain inventory and oversee care of instruments, equipment, and music library
  • Budget rehearsal time effectively
Music Program Responsibilities
  • Direct and manage the following high school bands, including:
    • Concert Band
    • Marching Band
    • Jazz Band
  • Organize and lead performances at:
    • School concerts
    • Athletic events (pep band)
    • Community events and parades
    • Festivals and competitions
  • Plan and supervise marching band rehearsals, including summer and after‑school practices
  • Coordinate pep band participation at home athletic events
  • Develop and grow the band program through recruitment and retention efforts
  • Coordinate travel, logistics, and supervision for performances and events
  • Collaborate with the administration and activities staff to support school events
Other Duties to Students
  • Encourage students to strive to meet their highest musical and academic potential
  • Establish and communicate clear classroom and rehearsal expectations
  • Provide supervision and instruction during rehearsals, performances, and events
  • Be available to students and parents for music‑related communication outside the instructional day under reasonable terms
  • Maintain open communication with students and families regarding progress and performance expectations
  • Take necessary precautions to ensure the safety of students and equipment
Professional Contacts and Activities
  • Attend and participate in faculty and department meetings
  • Collaborate with staff to support student learning and school goals
  • Keep administration informed of program activities and needs
  • Provide requested information in a timely and effective manner
  • Participate in professional development related to music education
Other
  • Assist in upholding and enforcing school rules
  • Maintain accurate and complete records as required
  • Input data in a timely manner
  • Assume responsibility for professional growth and development
  • Adhere to the Code of Ethics of the Idaho Teaching Profession
  • Represent the school district in a positive manner
  • Follow district policy and chain of command
  • Perform other duties as assigned
