Adjunct, English Composition and/or Integrated Reading and Writing
Under general supervision, prepare and teach Introductory and Intermediate English Composition and other English courses as needed. Faculty member may be assigned to any SLCC location.
Applicants must be authorized to work in the United States.
All employees are expected to maintain a permanent residence within the State of Utah as a condition of employment. New employees must provide a valid Utah residential address within 30 days of their start date.
Special Instructions
This is a pooled position. The department reviews applications as positions become available.
This position is paid at $1,056 per instructional unit.

- In accordance with SLCC policy, adjunct positions are offered on a semester-by-semester basis with no guarantee of continued employment.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities & Knowledge Skills & Abilities
- Follows the English course curriculum outline, prepares and delivers lectures and other classroom activities
- Uses the published Canvas development shells
- Keeps accurate classroom records
- Coordinates Student ADA accommodation requests following college policy and procedures
- Answers student questions and provides necessary feedback on student progress
- Supports the Department of English, Linguistics, and Writing Studies (ELWS) assessment initiatives
- Meets College and department deadlines and evaluates student work in a timely manner, including submitting final grades on-time
- Completes all required trainings
- Demonstrates and supports professional commitment to division, school, and college mission and values
- Becomes familiar with, and abides by, all college policies with immediate priority given to those policies that govern interactions with colleagues, staff, administrators, and departments throughout the organization
- Maintains professional etiquette in communications with students, staff, faculty, and administrators
- Provides appropriate and timely feedback for all assignments
- Returns graded assignments in a timely fashion per department standards
- Maintains student attendance records (for Financial Aid purposes) and grades
- Conducts a variety of appropriate evaluations of student performance
- Informs students of progress-to-date periodically and assigns and submits grades by published deadlines
- Assists in maintaining a safe and mutually respectful instructional environment
- Prepares and submits incident reports to Dean of Student Services for inappropriate student behavior as defined by the Code of Student Rights and Responsibilities Policy
- Maintains professional and collegial behavior
- Handles/responds to student concerns/complaints, and responds to student communications and inquiries promptly (generally within 1-2 business days)
- Maintains professional appearance as defined by the discipline and/or College procedure
- Completes all required employee trainings
- Completes the ELWS department orientation annually
- Completes the Canvas User Credential within a semester of being hired
- Completes the Online Teacher Credential if teaching online classes
- Completes the Livestream Teacher Credential if teaching Livestream classes
- Knows and enforces FERPA guidelines
- Provides ADA accommodations as requested
- Other job related duties as needed
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- Expertise in current approaches to composition and English studies
- Demonstrated fluency in core pedagogies of writing instruction, including but not limited to: developing and supporting writing assignments; responding to student writing; facilitating the work of students in small groups, as well as in whole-class activities; and facilitating collaborative work
- Expertise and teaching experience in a variety of writing courses, including technical and professional writing
- Demonstrable proficiency with writing technologies, including but not limited to online or technology-enhanced course design and teaching, multimedia, hypertext, and distance education
