As a Phlebotomist at our facility you will be an integral part of our Laboratory team. We are a highly functioning team that supports many different departments and has a passion for providing the best patient care through compassionate, professional interactions and reliable testing.

• Adhere to the organization’s mission and behavioral expectations (compassion, caring, confidentiality), provide excellence in health care delivery, support the dignity of all persons, and practice responsible stewardship of resources.
• Receive orders by telephone or requisition from nursing units or physicians; enter requests in the computer by patient number, operator and tests ordered; travel to patient sites as necessary to obtain specimens.
• Prepare skin sites and perform venipuncture and skin punctures according to established aseptic techniques to obtain blood specimens in accordance with physicians’ orders.
• Instruct patients in specimen collection methods (e.g., urinalysis and bacteriology) and obtain specimens for culture and analysis.
• Label and record specimens, transport to the laboratory, and distribute to the appropriate laboratory area for analysis.
• Follow safety guidelines for self, patients, visitors and co-workers; wear personal protective equipment, follow universal precautions, and be knowledgeable about blood-borne pathogens.
• Perform other duties as assigned.
• Collect blood samples and urine from patients for laboratory testing including blood cultures.
• Register specimens and order tests in LIS; prepare/label samples for internal or external testing.
• Communicate lab test requests and results to appropriate staff, departments, and/or physicians.
• Collect and document urine drug screens requiring chain of custody.
• Assist with in-services or training as assigned.
• Assist with administrative duties within the laboratory.

• Previous health care experience required; laboratory experience and knowledge of aseptic methods and basic medical terminology preferred.
• Good communication skills.
• Analytical skills to select the best site for obtaining blood and bacteriological specimens based on physicians’ orders.
• Does not pose a direct threat or risk to the safety and health of themselves and other employees.
• Phlebotomy or Medical Assistant certification.
• Minimum 6 months of phlebotomy experience or completion of a phlebotomy training program.
• Excellent communication and people skills and problem-solving abilities.
• Computer skills and filing/clerical skills.
• High attention to detail and accuracy.
• American Red Cross or American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required within 30 days of hire.
• Valid driver’s license.
