Job Description
Title: School Adjustment Counselor
Reports To: Administrator of Special Education
Position
Description:
The School Adjustment Counselor uses home–school relations as the medium through which an individual student’s response to and benefit from the school and its programs can be strengthened and improved. The School Adjustment Counselor works with parents, teachers, and other support staff to develop remedial plans for students and address constructive behavior.
- Provide direct services to Special Education Students requiring social, emotional, or behavioral services as mandated by the Individualized Education Program: social skills groups, small groups, individual counseling, crisis intervention.
- Provide clinical consultation to staff for Special Education Students as specified in the IEP.
- Consult and collaborate with collateral service providers, school psychologists, guidance counselors, nurses, principals, and classroom teachers to coordinate treatment planning and school‑based interventions.
- Consult and collaborate with parents/guardians/school staff to help all parties comprehend and deal constructively with behavioral difficulties.
- Assist in developing IEP goals for students with social/emotional disabilities, behavior plans, and therapeutic interventions.
- Conduct Functional Behavior Assessments for students with disabilities to facilitate eligibility determination, service delivery, and intervention planning.
- Provide crisis intervention for the general student population and clinical consultation with general and special education staff regarding student concerns.
- Provide referral information to help obtain necessary aid/support from specialized public or private organizations in serious clinical cases beyond school resources.
- Maintain complete, up‑to‑date, and accurate records as required by law, policy, and administrative regulations.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Administrator of Special Education.
- Master’s in Social Work, Guidance, or Psychology.
- Minimum of two years of working experience with children under 18 in an educational, child guidance, mental health, or clinical setting.
- DESE license:
School Social Worker/School Adjustment Counselor; LICSW or LCSW preferred.
Salary based on Unit A Teacher contract salary schedule.
