Job DescriptionTITLE: School Adjustment Counselor
REPORTS TO: Administrator of Special Education
POSITION
DESCRIPTION:
The School Adjustment Counselor uses home-school relations as the medium through which an individual student’s response to and benefit from the school and its programs can be strengthened and improved. The School Adjustment Counselor works with parents, teachers, and other support staff to develop a remedial plan for the student and works with the child, teachers, other support staff, and parents to deal constructively with the student behavior.

- Provide direct services to Special Education Students requiring social/emotional/behavioral services as outlined in the Individualized Education Program, including:
- Social Skills Group
- Small group
- Individual counseling
- Crisis Intervention
- Provide clinical consultation to staff for Special Education Students as written in the Individualized Education Program.
- Consult and collaborate with collateral service providers for Special Education Students to coordinate treatment planning and school-based interventions.
- Consult and collaborate with school psychologists, guidance counselors, nurses, principals, and classroom teachers to assess the mental and emotional health of students having school difficulty and to develop appropriate remedial plans.
- Consult and collaborate with parents/guardians/school staff to help parties comprehend and deal constructively with anomalous behavior.
- Assist in developing IEP goals for Special Education Students with social/emotional disabilities, behavior plans, and therapeutic interventions for these students who present with a variety of social/emotional learning needs.
- Conduct functional behavior assessments for students with disabilities to facilitate eligibility determination, service delivery, and intervention planning.
- Be available for crisis intervention for the general student population.
- Be available for clinical consultation with all general and special education staff regarding student concerns.
- Provide referral information to staff and parents to obtain necessary aid/support from specialized public or private organizations in serious clinical cases beyond the resources of the school.
- Maintain complete, up-to-date, and accurate records as required by law, policy, and administrative regulations.
- Perform other duties and assume other responsibilities as assigned by the Administrator of Special Education.
- Master’s degree in social work, guidance, or psychology.
- Minimum of two years working experience with children under 18 in an educational, child guidance, mental health, or clinical setting.
- DESE license:
School Social Worker/School Adjustment Counselor and LICSW or LCSW preferred.
