Certified Nursing Assistant

Summary

Under the supervision of an LPN, RN, or nurse leader, the Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) provides patient-centered, evidence-based nursing care to meet the physical and psychosocial needs of patients. The CNA collaborates with all members of the care team to ensure high-quality, cost-effective, and safe patient care, and contributes to departmental goals through compassion, safety, and continuous professional development.

• Perform delegated patient care activities using evidence-based practice and competencies appropriate for the patient population served.
• Assist in meeting the care needs of patients in collaboration with the care team to ensure quality, cost-effective, safe practices.
• Demonstrate clinical expertise in the assigned specialty and perform all functions of a CNA that are age appropriate, developmentally sensitive, and culturally specific.
• Respectfully address situations or decisions to ensure patient concerns and needs are met.
• Identify ways to improve the patient’s experience of care, streamline processes, and lower costs, enhancing satisfaction for patients, families, and team members.
• Identify and escalates patient risk to prevent crises.
• Maintain professional and therapeutic relationships with patients, families, staff, and providers.
• Reinforce patient education to improve care outcomes and promote safe practices.
• Perform and document patient cares, including personal hygiene, mobility, activities of daily living, and vital signs, ensuring a safe care environment.
• Provide care such as collecting body fluids for testing and cultures, administering medications when applicable, and supporting the nursing plan of care and physician orders within the CNA scope.

• High school diploma or GED preferred.
• Must be at least 18 years of age (exceptions apply for certain locations).
• Valid State of Wisconsin CNA Certification.
• American Heart Association Healthcare Provider Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required.

• Move freely, including standing, stooping, walking, bending, pushing, and pulling.
• Lift up to 50 pounds without assistance.
• Work in a setting exposed to blood borne pathogens, bodily fluids, and sharp objects.
• Manual dexterity and hand‑eye coordination required for patient care procedures.

• Frequent exposure to sharp objects and instruments.
• Occasional exposure to moving mechanical parts, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, and risk of electrical shock.
• Occasional high noise level.
• Extended standing or walking periods.
• Transporting, transferring, and positioning patients and/or equipment.
• Possible exposure to communicable diseases, hazardous materials, and pharmacological agents.
• Potential contact with aggressive or combative patients.
