About the Role
The Sr. Controls Engineer will drive design, functionality, and testing of upper-level automated sortation systems. They lead and support the design and programming of projects, diagnose and solve control issues, and mentor junior engineers.
Key Responsibilities- Write and implement modular, reusable PLC code and assist in all on-site controls engineering tasks.
- Design and develop Human Machine Interface (HMI) using Ignition, Wonderware, Factory Talk View, or Factory Talk Optix.
- Implement PLC and HMI programs to satisfy current design and customer specifications.
- Collaborate with FORTNA employees, customer representatives, and third‑party vendors to consider all project aspects during design and execution.
- Review electrical designs and provide accurate as‑built drawings for approval.
- Commission and troubleshoot complex automated systems, provide site engineering support, and complete system acceptance testing.
- Support system commissioning efforts as required.
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Electrical Engineering Technology, or comparable.
- 4–7 years of experience within an industrial controls environment including PLC programming (Rockwell required, Siemens, Schneider or other expected).
- HMI programming experience (Factory Talk View, Ignition, Wonderware, Indusoft).
- Input and output device design, implementation, and troubleshooting.
- Industrial communication network experience (Ether Net/IP, Profinet, Modbus, etc.).
- Low‑voltage electrical design knowledge and drawing creation.
- Experience with VFDs preferred; networked VFDs a plus.
- Experience with Microsoft 365 Office Apps.
- Self‑motivated, detail‑oriented and results‑focused.
- Understand VFDs, induction motors, PLCs and industrial networks.
- Demonstrated project, service or relationship management principles.
- Ability to troubleshoot and isolate controls I/O problems.
- Schedule, manage, and execute basic system implementations, enhancements and retrofits.
- Effective written and verbal communication with team, project managers and customers.
- Provide direction and leadership to junior level controls engineers.
This role operates in a professional office environment and travels up to 70–75% of the time to sites. Work may involve standard office equipment and industrial conditions requiring appropriate PPE, electrical diagnostic tools, and networking equipment. Physical demands include lifting up to 50 pounds, climbing ladders, and working in confined spaces.
CompensationThe base salary range for this role is $87,600 to $131,300.
