Position: School Custodian III, IV - Pearl City High

School Custodian III, IV - Pearl City High

The Hawaiʻi State Department of Education is hiring a School Custodian – authorized to the School Custodian IV level, with applications being accepted down to School Custodian III in the event of recruiting difficulties.

Salary Range
  • School Custodian III (WS‑02): $4,672.00 per month
  • School Custodian IV (F1‑02): $4,932.00 per month
Responsibilities
  • Direct the work of custodial staff to keep the school building and grounds clean and orderly.
  • Assign, lay out, supervise and inspect the work of subordinates to ensure compliance with safety and quality standards.
  • Perform maintenance tasks: plumbing, electrical fixtures, and woodwork not requiring trade skills.
  • Supervise staff for special school functions and maintain special equipment such as swimming pools, auditoriums and loud‑speaker systems.
  • Supervise or participate in landscaping activities (planting, mowing, trimmings).
  • Requisition, receive, store and manage janitorial supplies, taking periodic inventories.
  • Maintain records of supplies dispensed and equipment issued.
  • Report on work accomplished, significant incidents or accidents.
  • Keep daily time sheets.
  • Maintain security responsibility for the school, including operating night lights.
  • Supervise student helpers when assigned.
  • Operate power equipment such as power lawn mowers.
  • Perform duties of lower‑level custodians as needed.
Minimum Qualifications
  • General custodial, grounds maintenance, or general labor experience of at least two (2) years for School Custodian III and three (3) years for School Custodian IV.
  • At least one (1) year of comparable work experience in a school custodial role within state service.
  • Supervisory experience: responsibility for scheduling, inspecting, training, disciplining, ensuring safety practices, and maintaining work records for at least one year (two years for School Custodian IV). Demonstrated aptitude for supervisory duties at the School Custodian III level.
  • Quality of experience must reflect the scope and responsibility required to perform custodial duties effectively.
