The Hawaii State Hospital provides care to adult patients with substance abuse disorders and serious mental illnesses referred by the courts. The hospital offers comprehensive psychiatric assessments, treatment, and rehabilitation. Staff work closely with each other and with patients to ensure a supportive therapeutic environment. LPNs provide medications to patients and assist nursing staff with care and treatment of all patients.
This position works in a hospital or clinic that provides care and treatment to patients who are mentally ill. The primary purpose of this position is to perform practical nursing care and related technical work in the care, treatment, and rehabilitation of mentally ill individuals. The position may work rotating shifts.
Role OverviewEntry Level Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) is provided specific and detailed instructions; receives close guidance, frequent review, and performs other duties as assigned.
Full Performance Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) receives general instructions and specific instructions or immediate supervision in advanced/specialized treatment and procedures; works independently with guidance only in new, unusual, or emergency situations; periodic performance reviews and performs other duties as assigned.
Applicants will be placed on the eligible list for all levels for which they are qualified.
Qualifications- Legal Authorization to Work: State of Hawaii requires all persons seeking employment to be citizens, nationals, or permanent resident aliens, or eligible under federal law for unrestricted employment.
- Prerequisite Qualifications for Entry Level: Knowledge of nursing process, body structure and function, principles of asepsis, universal precautions, infection control, medication administration, patient preparation, data gathering, interpersonal communication, alternative communication methods, patient safety, patient rights, individualized care, and many other listed areas.
- Ability to apply practical nursing principles, communicate in English, maintain records, respond to emergencies, follow instructions, and build effective relationships with staff and patients.
- Prerequisite Qualifications for Full Performance: In addition to entry level requirements: knowledge of practical nursing principles and patient age groups; ability to independently provide appropriate care, observe and report on patient conditions, and identify significant changes.
- Physical Requirements: Sensory: read orders, measure medications, distinguish colors, observe patient skin, hear stethoscope sounds. Coordination & Dexterity: administer medications, change dressings. Strength & Stamina: lift, transfer, restrain patients. Mobility: move throughout setting and respond quickly to emergencies.
- Experience: Entry Level: none. Full Performance: one (1) year of progressively responsible work experience as a licensed practical nurse involving personal care, nursing care, and related technical work.
- License: Current State of Hawaii license to practice as a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN).
