This position serves as a Lieutenant within the University of Mississippi Police Department, providing leadership, supervision, and operational oversight for assigned patrol shifts and specialized functions. The Lieutenant directs and coordinates the activities of officers engaged in patrol, security, and traffic enforcement to ensure a safe campus environment for students, faculty, staff, and visitors.

Responsibilities include supervising shift operations, reviewing and approving reports, investigations, ensuring compliance with departmental policies, and maintaining high standards of professionalism and accountability. The Lieutenant responds to critical incidents, provides guidance during complex situations, and may assume command in the absence of higher-ranking personnel.

The role plays a key part in developing and implementing departmental policies, procedures, and training programs. The Lieutenant remains current on applicable laws, including state and federal statutes, as well as campus-specific regulations such as Clery Act reporting requirements, and ensures personnel are properly informed and trained. The position also assists in accreditation efforts and supports compliance with reporting standards such as NIBRS.The

Lieutenant evaluates employee performance and provides recommendations related to promotions, discipline, transfers, leave, and professional development. This position fosters officer growth through mentor-ship, training coordination, and performance feedback.

Operational duties may include patrolling, field supervision, conducting and overseeing investigations, preparing case files, making arrests, and presenting evidence in criminal, civil, or university proceedings. The Lieutenant also collaborates with campus partners and external law enforcement agencies, serves as a departmental representative at meetings and events, and supports community engagement initiatives that promote safety and trust across campus.

Additional responsibilities include conducting security assessments of university facilities, supervising support staff, managing evidence and property control processes, and ensuring effective documentation and chain of custody procedures.

Measures of Success Success include the quality, accuracy, and timeliness of reports and investigations, as well as consistent compliance with departmental policies, accreditation standards, and Clery/NIBRS reporting requirements.

Strong performance is reflected in improved shift operations, proactive problem-solving, and sound decision-making during routine and critical incidents. The Lieutenant’s ability to develop personnel through training, mentor-ship, and fair, consistent evaluations is essential to long-term departmental success.

Additional measures include maintaining positive working relationships with campus stakeholders and external agencies, contributing to successful accreditation outcomes, supporting community-oriented policing efforts, and enhancing campus safety through visibility, engagement, and enforcement strategies.
