Job DescriptionSummary: Help meet physical and instructional needs of individual students with disabilities inside and outside the classroom. Work under the direction of a certified teacher and general supervision of the principal.
Qualifications and Education- High school diploma or GED certificate
- Associate’s degree, or two years of studies (48 semester hours) at an accredited institution
- Valid Texas Educational Aide Certificate
- Some experience working with children
Skills and Abilities
- Work effectively with children with disabilities
- Communicate effectively and cooperate with others
- Follow verbal and written instructions
- Demonstrate tact, courtesy, and helpfulness with staff, students, parents, and visitors
- Knowledge of general office equipment
- Provide virtual/distance learning via Google Classroom and other multimedia options
- Help teach prepare instructional materials and classroom displays
- Help maintain a neat and orderly classroom
- Help with inventory, care, and maintenance of equipment
- Help teacher keep administrative records and prepare required reports
- Provide orientation and assistance to substitute teachers
- Assist students with physical disabilities according to their needs (e.g., transferring to and from wheelchairs, lifting, positioning, feeding, bathroom needs, personal hygiene)
- Keep the teacher informed of special needs or problems of assigned student(s)
- Help manage student behavior, intervene in crisis situations, and restrain disruptive or dangerous students as needed
- Recognize and adapt to each student’s medical, physical, communicative, and emotional needs
- Work with assigned students or small groups to develop motor skills and conduct instructional exercises assigned by the teacher
- Help supervise students throughout the school day, inside and outside the classroom (lunchroom, pickup, playground, etc.)
- Maintain confidentiality
- Participate in staff development training programs to improve job performance
- Participate in faculty meetings and special events as assigned
- Follow district safety protocols and emergency procedures
- Perform other duties as assigned

Equipment UsedComputer, telephone, printer, copier, fax machine, calculator, standard instructional equipment, peripherals, and other specialized and adaptive equipment used by students.
Working ConditionsEmployees may work indoors or outdoors, participate in moderate standing, reaching, kneeling/squatting, bending/stooping, pushing/pulling, light and occasional heavy lifting, and control of behavior through physical restraint. They may work during harsh weather, in noisy environments, and may experience biological hazards. Emphasis is placed on emotional control under stress and the ability to manage frequent interruptions. Hours may be prolonged or irregular.
