The Mechanical Design Engineer I is responsible for preparing mechanical designs and bills of material for shell and tube heat exchangers, pressure vessels, and related components. This role supports engineering and estimating efforts by producing accurate, technically sound designs and drawings aligned with project specifications and applicable standards.
The position requires the ability to interpret fabrication drawings and specifications, develop scale drawings using CAD software, and support reverse engineering efforts as needed. The Mechanical Design Engineer I works closely with estimating, production, and engineering teams to ensure designs are complete, accurate, and suitable for fabrication.
Key Responsibilities- Design shell and tube heat exchangers, pressure vessel components, and related mechanical equipment.
- Prepare detailed and accurate bills of material for each component and assembly designed.
- Develop scale drawings and layouts using AutoCAD 2D and other applicable design tools.
- Interpret customer drawings, fabrication drawings, and technical specifications to ensure design accuracy.
- Perform reverse engineering of components and assemblies when required.
- Ensure all designs align with applicable industry standards, codes, and internal design practices.
- Communicate effectively with internal departments to clarify design requirements and resolve technical questions.
- Maintain consistency and accuracy in design methodology and documentation.
- Support engineering and estimating teams with technical information as needed.
- Bachelor of Science in Engineering required (Mechanical Engineering preferred).
- Entry-level to early career engineering experience in mechanical or design engineering preferred.
- Experience with pressure vessels or heat exchanger design is a plus.
- Basic knowledge of materials of construction used in fabrication and manufacturing.
- Working knowledge of AutoCAD 2D or similar CAD software.
- Understanding of mechanical design principles and fabrication practices.
- Ability to read and interpret fabrication drawings and technical specifications.
- Strong technical communication skills, including clear written documentation.
- Consistent and methodical approach to problem-solving and design work.
- Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
- Ability to work effectively in a team-oriented engineering environment.
- Technical office environment with frequent computer-based design work.
- Collaboration with engineering, estimating, and production teams.
