At Houston Methodist, the Registered Nurse (RN) II position is a licensed staff nurse and an experienced clinician who functions at the Competent to Proficient stage of Benner's model of clinical practice. The RN II provides professional nursing care to a diverse patient population, conducts nursing assessments, assists with exams and treatment, patient education, and maintains medical records. The RN II delivers direct patient care efficiently, often for patients with varied and complex needs.
This role communicates and collaborates with physicians and the interprofessional health care team to facilitate, coordinate, and maintain compassionate, efficient, and high‑quality care, achieving desired treatment outcomes. The RN II demonstrates clinical competence by using technology, administering medications, performing procedures, managing emergencies, and acting as a patient and family advocate to monitor and maintain patient rights.
Leadership responsibilities include participating in or leading unit and shared governance initiatives, serving as charge nurse or preceptor to students or new employees, and possibly contributing to service line or hospital‑wide initiatives in partnership with management.

- Graduate of an education program approved by the credentialing body for the required credentials indicated below in the Certifications, Licenses and Registrations section
- Twelve months registered nurse experience in a healthcare environment
- RN – Registered Nurse – Texas State Licensure – Texas Board of Compact Licensure – Must obtain permanent Texas license within 60 days (if establishing Texas residency)
and - BLS – Basic Life Support or Instructor (AHA) – American Heart Association and
- ACLS – Advanced Cardiac Life Support or Instructor (AHA) – American Heart Association and
- PALS – Pediatric Advanced Life Support or Instructor (AHA) – American Heart Association within 4 months and
- NIHSTROKE – National Institute of Health Stroke Scale Certification (AHA) – American Heart Association within 4 months and
- NVCRISIS – Nonviolent Crisis Intervention or Instructor (CPI) – Crisis Prevention Institute within 4 months
- Magnet – ANCC Recognized Certification or
- ENPC – Emergency Nursing Pediatric Certification (ENA)
or - TNCC – Trauma Nursing Core Course or Instructor (ENA)
- Demonstrates the skills and competencies necessary to safely perform the assigned job, determined through ongoing skills, competency assessments, and performance evaluations as defined in orientation checklist and annual departmental competency checklist
- Proficient in speaking, reading, and writing English necessary to perform essential functions, especially regarding patient or employee safety or security
- Effectively communicates with patients, physicians, family members and co‑workers in a customer‑service focused manner
- Strong assessment, organizational and problem‑solving skills, evidenced by capacity to prioritize multiple tasks and role components
- Functions independently and exercises judgment in interactions with physicians, the interprofessional care team, patients and families
- Uses critical thinking and clinical judgment to work autonomously as defined by the Nurse Practice Act
- Demonstrates proficient time‑management skills
- Maintains professional contributions as defined in the Clinical Career Path program guide
- Working knowledge of Microsoft products, including Outlook
- Uses therapeutic communication, including active listening and teaching, to establish relationships with patients, families, and the interprofessional care team to collaborate on the plan of care.
