Under the direction of the QC Manager, the Lab Tech I’s main task is to perform laboratory tests to determine chemical and physical properties for quality control on raw or bulk materials and finished products, and to conduct process control.

Job Responsibilities
  • Maintain the cleanness and tidiness of the office area and lab area.
  • Clean and sterilise lab equipment including glassware.
  • Perform mathematical conversions and correctly use significant figures.
  • Operate basic laboratory equipment such as balances, pipets, ovens/furnaces, centrifuge.
  • Check the COAs for incoming raw materials.
  • Input sample information and testing results into LIMS. Generate COA when necessary.
  • Independently perform the basic testing items on raw material, process samples, or finished goods such as density, specific gravity, kinematic viscosity, dynamic viscosity, flash points, pH, alkalinity, colour, titrations, and other physical properties.
  • Conform to accepted industry standards including ASTM, SAE, ISO, DMV, and other customer specific requirements.
  • Assist in communication with Reaction group, Blending and Production, Plant support, and transport drivers for bulk shipping.
  • Adhere to the QA/QC program such as calibration verifications, SQCs, round robin study or ILU study.
  • Prepare chemical solutions to standard formulas and help maintain sample retention/disposal protocol.
  • Learn and follow Third Coast quality policy and Safety Policy and related procedures. Participate in lab safety processes and contribute to the safe operations in the lab.
  • Exhibit and practice the Third Coast Way fundamental behaviours.
Knowledge
  • High School Graduate or GED required.
  • 2 years of college-level coursework in Chemistry or related Sciences required.
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Outlook, Excel, Internet, and other basic computer software.
Work Experience
  • 1 year of related laboratory experience and/or training.
Skills and Competencies
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, standard operating procedures, instrument manuals, and industry methods (English). Ability to write routine reports and speak effectively before groups of team members (English).
  • Ability to do mathematics related to laboratory methodology calculations, including a scientific calculator.
  • A valid driver’s licence.
Physical Requirements
  • The physical demands required are to sit, stand, talk, and hear, smell, stoop, kneel, crouch, and lift items.
  • While performing the duties of this job, the team member works near moving mechanical parts exposed to fumes, and other chemicals which will require specific PPE and safety precautions.
