• Explain procedures to patients to ensure understanding and comfort during the ultrasound process.
• Assist patients in preparing for the ultrasound, such as positioning them on the examination table.
• Provide patients with appropriate clothing, such as gowns, and maintain their privacy during the procedure.
• Set up and calibrate ultrasound equipment for optimal imaging based on the patient’s needs.
• Use the ultrasound machine’s transducer to capture high‑quality images.
• Monitor patient responses during the procedure, adjusting the equipment as necessary to ensure accurate results.
• Review images to ensure they are of sufficient quality for diagnosis.
• Adjust settings on the ultrasound equipment to improve image clarity as needed.
• Document results and provide reports to physicians or other healthcare professionals.
• Record patient information, procedures performed, and results in electronic health records (EHR) or other systems.
• Ensure proper documentation is provided for further medical analysis or consultation.
• Clean and maintain ultrasound equipment and examination rooms in accordance with health and safety standards.
• Follow strict infection control protocols to prevent contamination between patients.
• Work closely with physicians, radiologists, and other medical staff to interpret and evaluate diagnostic images.
• Participate in discussions regarding patient care and assist in providing additional imaging if required.
• Assist with other imaging tasks, such as echocardiograms or vascular ultrasound.
• Keep up with continuing education and training to stay current on ultrasound technology and best practices.

• Completion of an accredited ultrasound technology program (Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree).
• Certification through a recognized body such as the American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS) or the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT).
• Some states may also require specific state licensure, which could involve additional testing or compliance with state‑specific regulations.

• Strong attention to detail for capturing high‑quality images.
• Compassionate and empathetic, as working with patients is a key component of the role.
• Good communication skills to explain procedures to patients and collaborate with healthcare professionals.
• Ability to remain calm and professional in a fast‑paced or stressful environment.

Work typically occurs in hospitals, outpatient clinics, diagnostic imaging centers, or physician offices.
