Position: Transportation Maintenance Tech I/II/III (Pecos)

Transportation Maintenance Technician (Pecos)

Position:
Transportation Maintenance Tech I/II/III at Pecos Maintenance Office, Texas.

Salary

Tech I: $49,200–$61,130 annually (Grade A16). Tech II: $54,000–$64,469 (Grade A17). Tech III: $56,400–$71,055 (Grade A18). Salary subject to experience and business needs.

Responsibilities
  • Perform routine transportation operations and maintenance support work such as roadway maintenance, repair, and equipment operation.
  • Operate heavy and light equipment including front-end loaders, excavators, bulldozers, mowers, and truck trailers.
  • Execute traffic control activities at incidents, e.g., place cones, barricades, and traffic signs.
  • Maintain and repair highway structures, guard rails, markers, signposts, and handrails.
  • Assist law enforcement at accident sites and provide support to stranded motorists.
  • Conduct preventive maintenance inspections, routine servicing, and minor repairs on equipment.
  • Respond to emergency situations (floods, tornadoes, hazardous material spills, etc.) and perform related tasks.
Additional Duties Tech II
  • Inspect traffic control devices compliance with specifications and the Texas Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices.
  • Operate complex heavy equipment such as motor graders, excavators, bulldozers, cranes, herbicide trucks, asphalt paving machines, and profiling milling machines.
Tech III
  • Inspect traffic control devices and their placement at construction project sites for compliance.
  • Serve as work crew project lead ensuring work meets specifications.
  • Train other employees and conduct welding tasks as needed.
  • Identify, repair, and install signage, delineators, mailbox supports, and posts.
Qualifications
  • No experience required for Tech I; 1 year for Tech II; 2 years for Tech III in transportation engineering support, roadway maintenance, construction inspection, or heavy equipment operation.
  • Valid driver’s license required;
    Commercial Class A with N endorsement within 120 days of employment.
  • Physical ability to lift up to 50 lbs and perform required tasks.
Competencies
  • Knowledge of intermodal transportation engineering, highway bridge construction, equipment operation and safety procedures.
  • Ability to use hand and power tools, apply basic mathematics, organize work assignments, and follow written and verbal instructions.
  • For Tech II: basic vehicle mechanics and maintenance procedures;
    Texas Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices.
  • For Tech III: extensive knowledge of public relations, computer applications, and advanced technical functions.
Physical Requirements
  • Wearing protective gear such as respirator, hard hat, steel-toed boots; work in extreme temperatures, noise, vibration, mud, and hazardous materials.
  • Lift, carry, reach, bend, kneel, and walk as required; pre‑employment physical may be required.
  • Must pass a drug test and be able to respond to emergencies within 30 minutes on a 24‑hour basis.
