Distribution Engineer
Job Summary
A Distribution Engineer is responsible for designing, planning, and managing electrical distribution systems that deliver power to residential, commercial, and industrial customers. This role is critical to ensuring the safe, reliable, and efficient delivery of electricity while supporting system performance, growth, and modernization initiatives.
Key Responsibilities
* Distribution System Design:
* Design and optimize electrical distribution systems, including overhead and underground lines, substations, transformers, and related infrastructure. Ensure designs meet applicable industry standards and regulatory requirements.
* Network Analysis:
* Perform load flow, fault, and voltage drop analyses to evaluate system capacity and performance. Identify risks and develop solutions to improve network stability.
* Asset Management:
* Maintain accurate records of distribution assets. Conduct condition assessments and recommend maintenance, repair, or replacement strategies for aging or damaged equipment.
* Equipment Selection:
* Specify and select distribution equipment such as transformers, circuit breakers, switches, and protective devices based on system requirements and load demands.
* Safety & Compliance:
* Ensure all designs and projects comply with safety standards, environmental regulations, and industry codes. Support regulatory reviews and approvals as needed.
* Reliability Improvement:
* Identify opportunities to enhance system reliability, reduce outages, and improve overall power quality. Contribute to resiliency planning initiatives.
* New Service Connections:
* Evaluate requests for new electrical service. Assess system impacts and design infrastructure solutions to support customer growth.
* Project Management:
* Manage distribution projects from planning through execution. Coordinate with internal teams, contractors, and vendors to deliver projects on time and within budget.
* Emergency Response:
* Support outage response and restoration efforts by analyzing issues and implementing solutions to safely restore service.
* Data Analysis:
* Utilize data from monitoring systems, smart grid technologies, and other tools to assess performance and drive informed decision-making.
Qualifications
* Education:
* Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or a related field required; advanced degree preferred.
* Technical
Skills:
* Experience with distribution design and analysis tools. Proficiency with CAD software (such as AutoCAD) and familiarity with GIS platforms is a plus.
* Knowledge:
* Strong understanding of electrical distribution systems, grid operations, protection schemes, and relevant industry standards.
* Analytical
Skills:
* Ability to evaluate complex system data, troubleshoot issues, and develop effective engineering solutions.
* Safety Focus:
* Commitment to maintaining high safety standards in all aspects of design and field operations.
* Project Management:
* Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects, priorities, and deadlines effectively.
* Communication:
* Strong verbal and written communication skills with the ability to collaborate across teams and stakeholders.
* Adaptability:
* Ability to stay current with emerging technologies and evolving industry trends within the energy and utilities sector.
