The Assistant Fleet Maintenance Manager assists in planning, organizing, and supervising the Division's maintenance staff and functions. This position holds key responsibility for supporting overall fleet/equipment processes, including inspection, repair, pre/post servicing, vehicle distribution, quality assurance, and disposal at the Division level. This assistant will work in close partnership with the Divisional Maintenance Manager, Regional Maintenance Manager, and Operations teams to help ensure overall fleet condition, equipment reliability, safety, and cost-effective fleet performance.

Responsibilities

  • Assists with departmental hiring, training, coaching, performance management, discipline, scheduling of work assignments, and overtime authorization.
  • Helps maintain an ongoing preventive/corrective maintenance program which sets the standard for service excellence.
  • Reviews status reports including road calls, breakdowns, parts inventory, repairs, and safety performance to assist with fleet optimization.
  • Provides hands-on maintenance assistance as needed on the shop floor.
  • Supports the education of driver responsibilities as it relates to DVIR's, operation of fleet vehicles, and basic CDL requirements.
  • Assures all maintenance-related data is collected and available for input in the vehicle maintenance system.
  • Monitors Dossier efficiencies to assist with inventory control, goals for improved performance, monitoring, measuring, and reporting.
  • Assists in the purchasing of new vehicles, equipment, tools, and containers.
  • Coordinates and helps establish maintenance-related training sessions that improve overall fleet condition and operational knowledge of drivers, mechanics, and shop personnel.
  • Helps administer and monitor regional adherence to federal and state programs, and assists with overseeing maintenance in accordance with EPA and other mandatory regulations.
  • Verifies implementations of required DOT, OSHA, EPA regulations and monitors conformance as required on an ongoing basis, coordinating efforts with local Operations, Safety, Corporate Safety, and the Regional Maintenance Manager.
  • Contributes to ensuring efficient utilization, vehicle maintenance quality, and transportation to ready-lines.
  • Prepares fleet inventory/condition reporting, including out of service listing, matched to the asset list.
  • Assists in managing divisional maintenance budgets.
  • Helps implement and monitor all fleet maintenance activities (e.g., Pre/Post pre-trip, safety lane, warranty recovery, tire standards, oil/lubricants, major component failure, and all new initiatives).
  • Facilitates the movement of equipment between divisions, ensuring proper inspections and delivery of equipment in ready condition.
  • Evaluates body damage estimates as it relates to maintenance and fleet functions to help manage cost controls and enhance vendor service.
  • Evaluates equipment performance to recommend modifications and/or alternate vendors based on maintenance/costing information.
  • Analyzes service issues related to fleet maintenance to perform root cause analysis, recommend remediation methodologies, and escalate issues as needed.
  • Supports efforts to create useful metrics and performance (on-line/off-line) diagnostic reporting tools (e.g., machinery dynamics) to support fleet quality trending and fleet maintenance performance.

Qualifications

  • A High School diploma is required.
  • Requires 8 years progressive hands-on experience in fleet support and maintenance (Preferred background in Waste Services, Transportation, Maintenance).
  • Solid project management, resource planning, oral and written communication skills to effectively assist team leadership.
