Summary
This position is located on a USDA Forest Service Unit within the Pacific Northwest Region, Region 6. The incumbent serves as a key fire management specialist responsible for prescribed fire, fire planning, fuel management, air quality (smoke management), and budgeting.
Responsibilities- Provide program oversight and guidance related to the use of prescribed fire and naturally ignited wildfires to achieve Land and Resource Management Plan objectives.
- Coordinate the smoke management program to ensure compliance with state air quality standards and develop operational procedures in cooperation with federal, state, and local air‑quality officials.
- Evaluate fuel treatments on the ground for compliance with policies, standards, and guidelines.
- Advises and guides field personnel on correct procedures and practices.
- Develop local policy, standards, and guidelines for the Forest’s Fuel Management Program, including environmental assessments, prescribed burning plans, fuel treatment standards, inventories, and smoke management.
- Review environmental documents, prescribed fire plans, and fire management plans from other agencies and stakeholders.
- Implement and administer prescribed fire activities, wildfire response, and fuel‑management activities to meet management objectives and mitigation measures.
- Provide leadership in fire‑management program areas such as contracting, fire planning, aviation, safety, and wildfire response.
- Serve as Fire Management Officer, Forest Duty Officer, or Fire Staff in the absence of the FMO as required.
Applicants must meet all minimum qualifications for the position, including any education and experience required for fire‑management responsibilities. Results‑based, direct‑hire authority applies; veteran’s preference does not apply. The evaluation panel will assess experience related to the major duties and qualifications, including entitlement to CTAP, RPL, or ICTAP priority where applicable.
