Position: Wildland Firefighter (Senior Firefighter) - Direct Hire Authority

Direct Hire Authority. This Wildland Firefighter position serves as a Senior Firefighter on a fuels crew with the United States Wildland Fire Service (USWFS) in Pendleton, Oregon.

Major Duties

As a Wildland Firefighter (Senior Firefighter) – Direct Hire Authority, your duties will include but are not limited to the following: serves as an experienced leader within a wildland fire module or crew, executing fire‑management activities in fire preparedness, fuels management and prevention, and fire suppression, monitoring, and post‑fire; applies an understanding of firefighter safety, fire behavior, topography of the area, weather, fuels, and training in fire management;

plans action and directs utilization of fire line resources; directs assigned suppression operations and recommends and implements tactical strategies on fires; manages fuels projects such as prescribed fire, mechanical and biological treatments, inventorying fuel beds, and piling vegetation debris; gathers information on weather data, topography, fuel types, and fire behavior in responding to wildland fire incidents; directs the operation and use of special tools and equipment and ensures proper equipment and supplies needed for fire assignments;

directs the work of a small crew of firefighters in building firelines, burnout, mopping up, and patrolling firelines; performs administrative lead duties such as timekeeping, travel, government credit card management, maintaining records, and training firefighters.

Requirements

Must be a U.S. Citizen or National. Suitability for Federal employment, as determined by background investigation. Direct Deposit required. Must submit to a drug test and receive a negative result prior to appointment; position is subject to random testing for illegal drug use. Must pass a pre‑employment medical examination and may be subject to post‑employment medical examinations to determine if maintaining fitness standards for this position.

Must operate a government or private motor vehicle as part of official duties. Must hold and maintain a valid state driver’s license throughout employment. Official US Wildland Fire Service uniform is required. Must serve a 1‑year probationary period during which fitness and whether continued employment advances the public interest will be evaluated. Individuals assigned male at birth after 12‑31‑59 must register for the Selective Service (SSS.gov).

May be required to complete training and obtain or maintain a government charge card with travel and/or purchase authority.
