The Penn Hills School District, located in the eastern suburbs of Pittsburgh, is currently seeking a Paraprofessional for an intensive support 3-5 classroom.
You will need updated clearances—Act 151 Child Abuse, Act 34 Criminal Clearance and Act 114 FBI clearances to apply. You will need to submit a negative TB result before you may begin work.
Qualifications- Associates Degree or equivalent number of college credits (60), or a score in the average or above average on the TABE (Tests of Adult Basic Education) and complete the Credential of Competency for Special Para educator in Pennsylvania.
- One to two years of experience working with children with special needs strongly preferred.
- Training in crisis intervention, CPR and First Aid preferred.
- Ability to work as part of the educational team.
- Strong communication skills with emphasis on ability to communicate effectively in both oral and written form.
- Able to manage multiple priorities and to work independently.
- Demonstrate strong organizational and logistic skills in day‑to‑day operations and long range planning.
- Ability to be flexible and perform other tasks as assigned.
- Ability to prioritize identified needs of students by following directives of classroom teachers, staff and peers, as well as the goals of the IEP.
- Ability to apply computer software packages such as Microsoft Office and student management systems required.

Accountability ObjectiveThis position is responsible for providing an increase to the quality of instruction to students by performing any instructional or non‑instructional tasks required under the supervision of a certified professional (teacher, therapist, principal, supervisor). The Instructional Aide is not responsible for the design direction or evaluation of the teacher/learning process. Because the Instruction Aide is assisting students, regular attendance is required to fulfill the duties of this position.
The role of the Instructional Aide varies according to the program assignment. This work involves confidential matters. The aide should be able to use independent judgment in determining various issues that do not involve major deviations from established policy and procedure. The aide should understand program needs and anticipate/respond accordingly.
- Assists children to and from the bus at arrival and departure times when program and types of children warrant.
- Facilitates personal care services as needed to assist students with activities of daily living necessary for comfort and well‑being, including toileting of children.
- Prepares and operates instructional equipment and materials including, but not limited to: audio/visual equipment, iPAD, Smart board, Xerox copies, lamination, computer documents/printing, visual aids, artwork, etc., as directed by the teacher and/or therapist.
- Assures that all possible measures are taken to assist a child in the event of an emergency until help arrive. This includes notifying the immediate supervisor and/or supervising administrator immediately.
- Maintains good housekeeping and follows program health guidelines in the classroom and diaper changing area. This includes proper storage of materials, supplies and equipment; cleaning chalkboards, tables and chairs as needed; placing desks, tables and chairs in proper order, etc.
- Updates attendance records and data collection, as programs require under AIU PA Certified Professional direction, handles and maintains confidentiality as it pertains to special education.
- Assists with feeding of students who are unable to feed themselves. In addition, may collect lunch/snack money, submit lunch count information and supervise students in the cafeteria as needed.
- Assists students in the use of teaching devices, such as assistive technology devices and computers, and other equipment used for individualized instruction.
