Job Summary

Under the direction of the After School Site Supervisor and the School‑Age Director, the Child Development Aide will implement a structured, educational, and recreational before and/or after school program for children ages 5‑13. The Aide must work in a mature and sensitive way with children, parents, off‑site school personnel, and fellow staff, consistent with the YMCA philosophy.

Must be at least 16 years old; experience is recommended, but not required.

Working Conditions

The Child Development Aide must be comfortable with and able to function in a professional demeanor regardless of situations that arise. Must be able to organize the group, support staff, and facilitate emergency procedures. Activities take place in the Hopewell Valley Regional School District cafeterias, playgrounds, indoor gym, and classrooms.

Essential Functions
  • Perform all duties in a manner that reflects and models the YMCA character values.
  • Ensure the reliability and safety of the after‑school program site.
  • Maintain staff/child ratio as set by the School‑Age Director and state licensing regulations and provide qualified substitutes if necessary.
  • Insure that all health and safety requirements are maintained.
  • Maintain consistent communication with the School‑Age Director regarding program concerns, supplies, schedule changes, staffing, and participant concerns.
  • Lead and/or help implement daily programming lesson plans, including daily set‑up and clean‑up.
  • Maintain effective and timely communication with staff and parents regarding program news, changes, illnesses, and other necessary information.
  • Conduct all aspects of the program consistent with the YMCA philosophy.
  • Attend trainings, staff meetings, and workshops as posted by the School‑Age Director.
  • Help organize the group, support staff, and facilitate emergency procedures.
  • Fill out accident and incident reports as needed.
  • If maintains current CPR and First Aid training, copy the card for the School‑Age Director.
  • Take attendance at least twice daily, while inside and/or outside.
  • Provide a happy, safe, and rewarding experience for YMCA participants.
  • Physical Requirements

    Ability to interact and communicate clearly with all program participants, parents, fellow staff, and the public in a positive and sensitive manner. Ability to provide for the physical and emotional needs of children ages 5‑13. Responsible for placement, positioning, and operation of all program areas and for set‑up and break‑down of all program supplies and equipment.

    Mental Requirements

    Must display maturity to represent the YMCA responsibly. Must be flexible, patient, and able to identify and accommodate changing needs of participants and parents. Must read and interpret instructions and verbally give clear, concise instructions, especially with children.
