The Pennington School is seeking a Middle School science teacher for the 2026-27 academic year.

The ideal candidate for this position is a highly engaging and passionate Middle School educator who will teach Physical Science in Grade 8 and possibly Earth Science in Grade
7. Candidates should have a proven record of effectiveness in teaching science and a developmental understanding of and appreciation for working with students in this age group (Grades 6 through
8). The ideal candidate will embrace a student-centered approach to learning and guide students to work toward personal and collective goals in skills, habits of mind, and understanding. Class sizes typically range from twelve to sixteen students.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Teach three sections of eighth-grade Physical Science and possibly one section of seventh-grade Earth Science
  • Create personalized, student-centered, and highly engaging learning experiences that have a lasting impact
  • Elicit individual excellence in every student, moving the student toward personal and collective goals in skills, habits of mind, and understanding
  • Lead a Grade 8 advisory group
  • Create, organize, and oversee the Grade 8 Science Fair
  • Meet with parents of science students to discuss student progress during fall conferences
  • Meet with advisees and their parents in April for parent/advisor/advisee conferences
  • Write narrative comments for report cards at each marking period (four times yearly)
  • Demonstrate warmth, respect, humor, and teamwork in interactions with students, parents, and colleagues
  • Develop and practice cultural competence in teaching and community life
Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in education or science; master's degree preferred
  • Experience teaching at the middle-school level; independent school experience preferred
  • Strong desire and ability to work with middle school students
  • Knowledge of pedagogical strategies for teaching middle school students
  • The ability to implement and help create a highly engaging, interactive, experiential science program is required.
  • Ability to differentiate teaching and apply student accommodations to instruction, coursework, and assessments in order to work with a range of learning styles
  • Ability to create a safe environment in which students can take risks and be themselves
  • Ability to use technology (including a smart board) in highly effective ways to enhance teaching and learning
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
Other requirements:
  • Candidates interested in residential opportunities are encouraged to indicate their interest during the application process
  • Lead at least two extracurricular and/or athletic endeavors per year
  • Attendance at School events, which may include occasional weekends and evenings, is also required, including (but not limited to) overnight trips.

This position is full-time, teaching on campus for ten months during the year, and is exempt from overtime, with a starting date in August 2026. The minimum annual salary for this position is $52,000. The actual offer will be commensurate with skills and experience. The working environment is an office and school environment on a 55-acre campus. The ability to occasionally lift files and storage boxes, walk up and down stairs, attend meetings in varying locations throughout campus, and continually use computers and related office equipment is required. Not all buildings on campus have elevators.
