Job Summary:
The Field Engineer supports field operations in the successful delivery of railroad maintenance, repair and new construction projects. This position provides technical, administrative, and field support to help ensure projects are completed safely, on schedule, within budget, and in accordance with contract requirements, quality standards, and company policies.
This position will work closely with project leadership, subcontractors, suppliers, and field crews to support daily construction activities, project documentation, scheduling, procurement, quantity tracking, and quality control efforts. This is an excellent opportunity for a recent graduate or early-career professional seeking hands-on experience in construction operations and project delivery.
Responsibilities:
- Assist the Project Team with project engineering activities to support construction operations and project schedules.
- Support the preparation, maintenance, and updating of project schedules and short-term work plans.
- Assist with the review and interpretation of project plans, specifications, and contract documents.
- Prepare, track, and manage project submittals, shop drawings, material certifications, and other project documentation.
- Support procurement activities, including material takeoffs, requests for quotations, purchase requisitions, and purchase order tracking.
- Assist with change order documentation, pricing, and tracking.
- Monitor project quantities and maintain accurate records for progress tracking and billing purposes.
- Review field reports and project documentation for accuracy and completeness.
- Coordinate with field supervision, subcontractors, suppliers, and project stakeholders to support daily construction activities.
- Participate in subcontractor and project coordination meetings and communicate updates related to schedules, drawings, and specifications.
- Assist with field layout, surveying, and verification activities as needed.
- Help identify and resolve field issues, design conflicts, constructability concerns, and schedule impacts.
- Support quality control efforts and ensure project documentation meets company and contract requirements.
- Maintain positive working relationships with clients, inspectors, subcontractors, and project team members.
- Observe project progress and communicate potential schedule delays, material shortages, or operational challenges to project leadership.
- Assist with project mobilization planning, equipment coordination, and workforce logistics.
- Participate in daily operations meetings, weekly safety meetings and other required field communication meetings.
- Support estimating and bidding activities, including quantity takeoffs, vendor pricing requests, and project setup activities.
- Assist with tracking and reconciling project quantities for production reporting and payment applications.
- Support the documentation of time-and-material work and maintain accurate project records.
- Assist in reviewing daily operations reports and other field documentation to ensure timely and accurate reporting.
- Travel as necessary to assist with project support on job sites as directed.
- Assist with other duties as assigned to ensure operational success within the organization.
- Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering, Construction Management, Engineering Technology, Project Management, or a related field; equivalent combinations of education and relevant construction experience may also be considered.
- Basic understanding of construction drawings, specifications, and contract documents.
- Strong organizational, problem-solving, and time-management skills.
- Effective verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to work independently while contributing to a collaborative project team.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, Outlook, and PowerPoint).
- Ability to travel to project sites up to 50% of the time as required.
- Internship, co-op, or professional experience in heavy civil, transportation, railroad, or infrastructure construction.
- Familiarity with railroad Maintenance of Way (MOW) operations, track and structure maintenance, or FRA regulations.
- Exposure to project scheduling, estimating, cost tracking, surveying, or construction management software.
- Experience working in a field construction environment.
- Understanding of quality control processes and construction safety practices.
- Working knowledge of site surveying principles and construction layout techniques.
- Experience with Bluebeam, HCSS, Primavera P6, Microsoft Project, AutoCAD, or similar construction software is a plus.
- Ability to work in both office and outdoor construction environments.
- Ability to walk uneven terrain and active construction sites for extended periods.
- Ability to occasionally lift and carry up to 50 pounds.
- Must be able to work in varying weather conditions and around heavy equipment.
