High School Stage Crew – Drama Guild Technical Director Great Valley High School Base Salary $3867.00
* Position Summary

The High School Drama Guild Technical Director is responsible for overseeing and coordinating all technical and backstage aspects of the school's theatrical productions, specifically the fall play and spring musical. This includes the planning, supervision, and successful execution of all technical, design, and backstage elements required to support high-quality performances.

This position works closely with the Drama Guild Director and student leaders to ensure that all production departments are progressing appropriately and meeting established deadlines.

The Technical Director reports directly to the Drama Guild Director.

Key Responsibilities Production Leadership and Coordination

Plan, coordinate, and execute all technical and backstage elements for Drama Guild productions, including:

  • Fall play
  • Spring musical

Collaborate closely with the Drama Guild Director to support the artistic and practical vision of each production.

Oversee production timelines and ensure that all technical and design areas are progressing appropriately throughout the rehearsal process.

Help establish deadlines, monitor progress, and follow up with student leaders and crew members to ensure responsibilities are completed on time.

Technical Design and Execution

Oversee and/or execute technical elements including:

  • Stage lighting
  • Sound systems and microphones
  • Special effects (as applicable)
  • Scenic implementation and backstage operations

Ensure all technical cues, transitions, and backstage procedures are executed accurately and safely during performances.

Design Department Oversight

Oversee and coordinate student teams responsible for:

  • Set design and construction
  • Props acquisition, creation, and organization
  • Costuming and costume organization
  • Hair, make‑up, and related backstage needs as applicable

Support student designers and crew members in planning, prioritizing tasks, and completing deliverables by established deadlines.

Ensure design departments communicate proactively about challenges, delays, or resource needs.

Stage Management Supervision

Recruit, train, and supervise the student stage management team.

Teach and reinforce:

  • Communication systems
  • Backstage leadership and logistics

Support stage managers in developing strong leadership, communication, accountability, and problem‑solving skills.

Rehearsals and Performances

Attend scheduled rehearsals as needed to coordinate technical integration.

  • Cue‑to‑cue rehearsals
  • Technical rehearsals
  • Dress rehearsals

Provide full technical and backstage support for all scheduled performances.

Supervise technical, backstage, and stage management operations during performances.

Student Supervision and Leadership Development

Recruit, train, and supervise student crew members across all technical and backstage areas.

Teach proper use of equipment, backstage procedures, organizational systems, and safety protocols.

Foster teamwork, accountability, responsibility, professionalism, and leadership among student crew members.

Help ensure students are not only assigned responsibilities but are actively following through on them.

Equipment and Safety Oversight

Maintain and manage all stage and technical equipment used for productions.

Ensure safe handling and operation of:

  • Rigging and backstage systems
  • Tools and construction materials

Coordinate maintenance and repairs as needed.

Qualifications
  • Experience in theatrical production, stagecraft, production management, lighting, and/or sound design
  • Strong organizational, leadership, and communication skills
  • Ability to manage complex productions with multiple moving parts and deadlines
  • Ability to supervise and mentor students effectively
  • Experience working with students in a theatrical or educational setting preferred
Schedule Requirements
  • Availability for after‑school rehearsals as needed
  • Required attendance for all technical rehearsals, dress rehearsals, and performances of the fall play and spring musical
