As part of the Costume Shop seamstress team, the Assistant Sample Maker will
construct costumes for all theater costume needs and seasonally supports the Costumes Sample Maker.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Work within the production team to construct all costumes for Sight and Sound Theatre shows during costume build seasons; balancing speed and efficiencies within the costume build, maintaining excellence while helping the team achieve costume build timeline goals
- Assist the Sample Maker in daily tasks as needed seasonally to construct original prototype costumes, learn sample making process, and gain experience in a broad range of costuming techniques and special effects costuming projects.
- Observe problem solving within projects by learning effective techniques for adjusting garment mechanics and fit.
- Maintain a high level of excellence in garment construction and sample making, using home sew and industrial machines, sergers, and pressing equipment.
- Interact professionally and expediently with Cast during intense fittings and alterations seasons, collaborating with the production team to determine efficient assembly process for each unique costume build.
- Attend production team process meetings and timeline meetings.
- Seasonally, support the production seamstress or cutting teams to achieve timeline goals and build deadlines.
Prerequisites:
- Strong problem-solving skills and the tenacity to complete complex projects in a timely manner
- Ability to pivot job responsibilities as workflow changes occur; able to self-manage and prioritize effectively
- Exemplify excellent teamwork and servant hearted mindset with grace under pressure in all interactions with the Costume Shop team and all Costume Shop customers
- Excellent communication skills with keen self-awareness in highly collaborative situations; be a strong listener with a high level of commitment to teamwork and a strong desire to promote cooperation, encouragement, and excellence in all interactions with team members
The physical demands of this position are active in nature. You will be expected to be on your feet frequently, walk and stand regularly, sit regularly, work indoors, use step stools, operate small machinery and power tools, and frequently lift/exert up to 50 lbs. of force. Qualifications Experience Preferred 2-3 years: 2-3 years:Experience with in a theater costume shop as a seamstress stitcher or master seamstress, or firsthand stitcher or draper, or garment industry experience.
