Middle School STEAM Teacher
This is a full‑time, exempt position teaching Middle School STEAM, reporting to the Head of Middle School. This position will begin on August 15, 2026. The ideal candidate will assume the responsibilities and possess the qualifications as indicated below.
Position StatementThe Shipley School seeks a qualified candidate for the position of Middle School STEAM Teacher who will also serve as Science Olympics coach and help build the Shipley robotics program.
Major Responsibilities- Teach multiple sections of MS STEAM
- Coach and help organize the MS Science Olympiad and Robotics programs
- Manage and upkeep of the Maker Space materials and equipment while bringing in new tech, projects, and processes.
- Collaborate with the curricular leader on the implementation of the STEAM curriculum
- Collaborate with other teachers across the division in creating and implementing projects in the Maker Space
- Serve as an advisor and commit to playing an active role in the MS
The ideal candidate will:
- Share a deep passion for technology, engineering, and the arts
- Work collaboratively with colleagues to develop a curriculum focused on hands‑on, project‑based learning that encourages students to think critically and persevere through challenges while learning the iterative design process.
- A willingness to employ differentiated instruction to meet learners at their level of need
The successful candidate should possess:
- Maturity, collegiality, flexibility, humor, commitment to positive growth
- Experience with code, robotics, 3D printers, lasers, basic workshop materials and equipment and vector graphics
- An ability to implement design and technology in the classroom
- Excellent problem‑solving skills
- Excellent speaking and writing skills
A minimum of 1‑2 years of teaching experience - BA in science, technology, engineering, or another related field (advanced degree preferred but not required)
- An appreciation for the unique qualities of the typical young adolescents found in middle school settings
- Inventory control, purchasing know‑how, love for PD, always on the hunt for new ideas.
The Shipley School, founded in 1894, is a co‑educational, college preparatory, independent day school currently enrolling about 700 students in grades Pre‑K through 12. Located in the western suburbs of Philadelphia, the school is committed to educational excellence and dedicated to developing in each student a love of learning and compassionate participation in the world. The Middle and Upper divisions have approximately 450 students and a faculty of 90.
