The successful applicant must be well prepared to assume responsibilities of the professoriate in general - teaching, service, and scholarship, and more specifically, as a counselor educator. The department is program-oriented but seeks a candidate who can teach generalist courses in addition to mastery of courses across all of the department's program specializations. Responsibilities also include advising students, supervising students in clinical courses, service to the department, college, and university, and generating new knowledge via conducting research and professional presentations.

All master's level program specializations offer classes in the late afternoons and evenings. Thus, teaching assignments may include nights and/or weekends. The Department of Counselor Education is a face-to-face program supplemented with hybrid or distance modalities (both synchronous and asynchronous). Additional teaching opportunities are also available during summer terms and for weekend and evening-based certificate programs. Doctoral courses are taught on Saturdays at an off-campus location.
