The Writing Center Assistant supports students in writing across the disciplines and in all stages of the writing process by helping students develop effective strategies and approaches to writing and by helping students become more confident as writers and as editors of their own work.  The Writing Center Assistant exhibits communication skills that attract students to the Writing Center and helps students to be inspired as writers.

This posting includes qualifications, experience and skills but is not limited to the full specifications stated in the job description.  The Writing Center Assistant reports to the Writing Center Director. The salary is $25 hourly for up to 20 hours per week.

Responsibilities (In-person)

* Consult one-on-one with students to help students in writing across the curriculum

* Maintain session-related records

* Develop and offer presentations and workshops on writing

* Liaise with faculty as needed to facilitate academic support efforts

* Engage in professional development as required

* Maintain a flexible schedule of hours during the semester that may include early morning, evening, and weekend assignments

Responsibilities (Online)

* Review and respond to student work submitted in the writing center LMS  to help students in writing across the curriculum

* Maintain session-related records

* Develop the writing center presence in the LMS

* Develop and post presentations and workshops on writing

* Liaise with faculty as needed to facilitate academic support efforts

* Engage in professional development as required

* Maintain a flexible schedule of hours during the semester that may include early morning, evening, and weekend assignments

Required Qualifications

* B.A. in English or a related field

* Familiarity with current writing center pedagogy and best practices

* Familiarity with typical writing assignments from across the curriculum

* Excellent oral and written communication skills

* Experience working with a diverse range of students with various levels of writing ability

* Information technology literacy skills

* Ability to work independently and collaboratively

Preferred Qualifications

* Prior experience working as a writing center assistant in a college or university writing center

* Experience using academic technology and learning management systems (e.g. D2L)

* Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging
