Title: Long Term Substitute Secondary English Teacher
Reports To: High School Principal and Assistant Principals
Qualifications- Possess a valid Pennsylvania Secondary English Teaching Certificate
- Possess 3.0 or higher QPA
- Possess proof of ongoing professional or educational experience
- Possess outstanding verbal and written communication skills
- Possess computer literacy
- Develop proficiency in the skills of listening, speaking, reading, and writing that are fundamental to good communication and literate citizenship.
- Develop appreciation for good literature of all types.
- Motivate students to read widely for information and recreation.
- Develop standards for critical judgment of written and oral communications transmitted by mass media.
- Discover and develop special talents of students in the field of English.
- Establish positive relationships with students, parents/guardians, and other staff members in the high school.
- Teaches content and skills in English language, literature, composition, reading, and listening to secondary students, utilizing the approved course of study adopted by the South Fayette Township School District.
- Instructs students in citizenship and basic subject matter specified in state law and administrative regulations and procedures of the school district.
- Adapts English material and methods to develop relevant sequential assignments that guide and challenge students.
- Selects and requisitions books and instructional aids appropriate to the interest and maturity level of students; maintains required inventory records.
- Develops lesson plans and instructional materials that foster and enhance learning.
- Translates lesson plans into learning experiences so as to best utilize the available time for instruction.
- Adapts the curriculum and differentiates instruction to meet the needs of the individual student.
- Develops standards for critical analysis through group discussions based on a variety of mass media and classical and contemporary literature.
- Encourages students to think independently and to express original ideas.
- Evaluates each student's progress in English skills (listening, speaking, reading, and writing).
- Encourages and emphasizes writing through the use of frequent prompts and high-quality opportunities for students to demonstrate a variety of writing styles; evaluates writing using holistic and summative rubrics.
- Instructs and assists all students in conducting research and completing research papers and projects.
- Identifies student needs and cooperates with other professional staff members in assessing and helping students solve health, attitude, and learning problems.
- Establishes and maintains standards of student behavior needed to provide an orderly, productive classroom environment.
- Evaluates students' academic and social growth, keeps appropriate records, and prepares progress reports.
- Communicates with parents/guardians through conferences and other means to discuss student progress and interpret the school program.
- Supervises students in out-of-classroom activities during the assigned working day.
- Works with students and other classroom teachers in coordinating entries in essay contests and other enrichment activities.
- Creates an effective environment for learning through functional and attractive displays, bulletin boards, and interest centers.
- Administers or monitors group tests and/or standardized tests in accordance with the district's testing program.
- Participates in curriculum and other developmental programs.
- Participates in faculty committees and the sponsorship of student activities.
