Position: Children's Program Specialist (Part-Time) - East Pennsboro Branch Library
Location: Enola

East Pennsboro Branch Library is seeking an enthusiastic and creative Children’s Program Specialist to present preschool Story Times, family programs, and other programs; visit preschools, schools, daycares, and community organizations; represent the library at community events; and coordinate Summer Reading performers and attendees on program days. The ideal candidate will bring a passion for children’s literature and strong communication skills to engage young audiences through stories, songs, and activities that create interactive, enjoyable experiences and inspire a love of reading and learning.

Schedule

15 to 18 hours per week, with shifts scheduled in the morning through mid-afternoon. Weekday shifts (Monday through Friday) vary based on the library’s programming needs. Saturday availability is required: 1 to 2 Saturdays per month, increasing to 2 to 3 Saturdays per month in June and July for Summer Reading. Must also be available to represent the library at annual local events.

This is a year-round position.

Essential Duties and Functions
  • Plan, present, and evaluate programs, keeping the goals of the library and the community’s interests as the focus.
  • Organize and present interactive Story Time sessions for children, incorporating storytelling techniques, songs, rhymes, and simple activities that engage young audiences.
  • Use age-appropriate books, stories, and activities that promote early literacy skills, creativity, and social development.
  • Create an inviting atmosphere for children and their caregivers, encouraging participation and fostering a positive library experience.
  • Lead programs tailored to different age groups, including infants, toddlers, preschool-aged children, and school-aged children, ensuring the content is appropriate and engaging for each audience.
  • Introduce children and caregivers to the library’s resources, including books, programs, and services, and encourage library card registration.
  • Coordinate promotional materials with the supervisor.
  • Other projects and responsibilities may be added at the supervisor’s discretion.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Ability to develop and present programs
  • Knowledge of children’s literature
  • Ability to work well with children and their caregivers
  • Ability to be self‑motivated, proactive, and work independently, making decisions based on good business practices and library philosophy
  • Knowledge of local resources to develop programming connections
  • Facility with technology and common computer operating systems/software
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Excellent organizational skills
Requirements
  • Experience working with children required, preferably in a library, educational, or childcare setting
  • Minimum of one year’s experience in marketing or related fields required
  • High school diploma or G.E.D. required; college degree preferred
Physical and Environmental Conditions

Work regularly demands light physical effort in the handling of materials, boxes, carts or equipment, and manual dexterity and visual acuity when working with a computer. Regularly lifts and carries books and materials weighing as much as 30 pounds; regularly pushes and pulls carts; regularly bends and reaches for books on top and bottom shelves; regularly uses repetitive movements and views small print when assisting patrons with searches on the computer.

Work may require standing for extended periods of time.

Employment Clearances

Must have FBI criminal history, Pennsylvania Child Abuse, and Pennsylvania State Police Criminal History clearance that qualify the individual for employment as outlined in the library system’s Employee Clearances policy.
