Position Summary:

Villanova University's first-year seminar program, the Augustine and Culture Seminar Program (ACSP), accepts applications throughout the calendar year to teach its two-semester humanities seminar. With a reading list grounded in the Augustinian, Catholic, and liberal arts traditions, the Augustine and Culture Seminar (ACS) is reading-and-writing-intensive and also facilitates student engagement in the intellectual, cultural, and artistic life of the University and the greater Philadelphia area.

Students from all four colleges (Liberal Arts & Sciences, Nursing, Engineering and Business) take the two courses (1000 Ancients and 1001 Moderns) in this program taught by 25+ full-time faculty from a wide range of disciplines.

Villanova is a Catholic university sponsored by the Augustinian order. The University is an Equal Opportunity employer and seeks candidates who understand, respect and can contribute to the University's mission and values.

Duties and Responsibilities:

The Augustine and Culture Seminar (ACS) is a two-semester first-year humanities sequence (ACS 1000: Ancients, and ACS 1001: Moderns) that educates students in Augustinian and humanistic inquiry through significant works of human culture and an intensive program of critical reading, writing, and discussion. Together, these features give our students a distinctive first-year experience:

* Small seminars capped at 16 students;

* A two-semester humanities sequence that is interdisciplinary and concerned with foundational texts;

* Broad engagement with the Augustinian and Catholic intellectual tradition, the heart of ACS 1000:
Ancients is Augustine's Confessions and the charge of ACS 1001:
Moderns is to explore the modern world giving particular attention to the continuing Augustinian and Catholic intellectual traditions, as reflected in the four key concepts of Catholic Social Thought, human dignity, solidarity, the common good, and subsidiarity.

* Writing-intensive curriculum that emphasizes the writing process, argument and analysis as well as informal and other, more creative assignments;

* Integration of classroom studies and lived experience through some common texts, and required co-curricular "Approved for ACS Course Credit" events.

Minimum Qualifications:

Advanced degree in a humanities or social science discipline at the time of application.
