Job Description:
Building Substitute Teacher
Position Summary
The Building Substitute Teacher provides consistent classroom coverage and instructional support throughout the school day to ensure continuity of student learning when teachers are absent or when additional classroom support is needed. The Building Substitute Teacher may be assigned to any grade level, subject area, or student support setting as directed by school administration. When classroom coverage is not needed, the Building Substitute Teacher may assist with student supervision and other school support activities as assigned.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Classroom Instruction & Coverage
* Provide classroom coverage for absent teachers and vacant positions as assigned.
* Implement lesson plans, instructional materials, and activities provided by the classroom teacher or administration.
* Maintain a safe, respectful, and orderly learning environment.
* Reinforce school wide academic and behavioral expectations.
* Take attendance and follow established classroom procedures.
* Support students in completing assigned work and participating in instructional activities.
* Provide instructional support in general education, intervention, special education, or small-group settings as assigned.
* Support the implementation of student accommodations and modifications as directed by certified staff.
* Communicate significant academic, behavioral, or safety concerns to administration and appropriate staff.
* Follow substitute plans, schedules, and instructional expectations provided by the school.
Student Supervision
* Supervise students during arrival, dismissal, lunch, recess, hallways, transitions, specials, testing, and school activities.
* Follow all school supervision, safety, and emergency procedures.
* Assist with monitoring student behavior and maintaining a positive school climate.
* Reinforce school wide behavioral expectations and procedures.
School Support Responsibilities
When classroom coverage is not needed, the Building Substitute Teacher may:
* Assist with student supervision during arrival, dismissal, lunch, recess, hallways, transitions, testing, and school activities.
* Provide classroom support to teachers and instructional staff as needed.
* Assist with testing administration, assemblies, school events, and special activities.
* Support basic clerical, organizational, or school-related tasks as requested by administration.
* Assist with maintaining an orderly, safe, and positive school environment.
* Perform other reasonable duties as assigned by the administration to support school operations.
Qualifications
Required
* Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university.
* Valid Pennsylvania Substitute Permit, Emergency Permit, Teaching Certificate, or eligibility to serve as a substitute teacher in accordance with Pennsylvania requirements.
* Successful completion of required background checks and clearances.
* Ability to work flexibly across grade levels, classrooms, and school settings.
* Strong classroom management, communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills.
* Ability to establish and maintain positive relationships with students and staff.
* Ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise sound professional judgment.
Preferred
* Pennsylvania teaching certification.
* Prior experience as a substitute teacher, classroom teacher, paraprofessional, or educator.
* Experience working with students from diverse academic and behavioral backgrounds.
* Experience supporting students with disabilities and implementing accommodations and modifications.
* Experience working in a charter school setting.
Physical Requirements
* Ability to stand and walk for extended periods of time.
* Ability to move throughout the school building and supervise students in various settings.
* Ability to lift and carry instructional materials and supplies as needed.
* Ability to respond appropriately during emergencies and student supervision situations.
