The School of Medicine received a $1.8 million award from California Medicine Scholars Program to build a pathway from Community College to Undergraduate to Medical School. Under the direction of the Assistant Dean for Admissions, Outreach, and Diversity and the general supervision of the Associate Director of Workforce Programs & Innovation, the Avenue Writing Specialist will assist in the design and support the implementation of pathway initiatives that span from community college to undergraduate universities to medical school.
The incumbent will serve as a key staff member in the implementation, communication, and collaboration of longitudinal pathway initiatives focused specifically on developing physicians to meet the regional healthcare needs of Northern California.
This position involves designing, conducting, promoting, evaluating, and supporting activities that strengthen writing development, application readiness, and preparation for medical school in compliance with organizational objectives. The Specialist supports undergraduate learners (including community college students) with responsibilities in several key areas, including providing individualized and group writing support; developing curriculum and resources focused on personal statements, secondary applications, and professional communication;
facilitating workshops and classroom instruction (including virtual and in-person teaching and learning activities); supporting medical school readiness initiatives; creating a community of belonging and inclusion through cohort activities; and assessing and evaluating student progress, writing competencies, and other impact measures for each pathway program. The Specialist works collaboratively with pathway staff and regional partners to support learner success across the continuum from community college through medical school preparation.

Minimum Qualifications - For full consideration, applicants are encouraged to upload license and/or certification if required of the position
- Bachelor's degree in related area and/or equivalent training/experience
- Experience working with students individually with college writing assignments.
- History of providing individualized and group-based writing support for undergraduate and community college learners, including coaching on personal statements, secondary applications, professional communication, and other medical school application materials.
- Experience designing, developing, and facilitating workshops, curriculum, and educational resources focused on writing development and medical school readiness through both virtual and in-person learning activities.
- Interpersonal skills to communicate and establish effective working relationships with individuals of varying skill levels, cultural backgrounds and perspectives.
- 60% - Seminar Instruction

The mission of the Office of Medical Education (OME) is to provide high quality support for the School of Medicine teaching programs through the delivery of centralized expertise, services and instructional resources to faculty and medical students. OME is an interdisciplinary team of technical, academic, and administrative support staff, directed by the Associate Dean for Education. OME supplies many of the resources needed by the faculty to organize, deliver, evaluate, and enhance the professional curriculum.
The unit also provides a variety of services directly to students, including instructional materials, financial aid, counseling, tutoring, and support for special programs. OME staff offer support for various School of Medicine and Health system committees, including the Promotions Board, the Committee on Educational Policy, and the Educational Advisory Board. Finally, OME sponsors a number of special programs in support of the academic mission and is able to assist with the presentation of those sponsored by other administrative or academic groups.
