Job Description
Penn State Abington seeks an engaging and dynamic candidate to fill a newly created opening for a Professional Math Tutor. The tutor will work in the Chaiken Center for Student Success providing tutoring in Algebra, Trigonometry, Geometry, Calculus, and Statistics to undergraduate students. The role includes developing workshops, structured academic initiatives, and collaborative opportunities that engage faculty, student organizations, and other members of the campus community.
The tutor will promote the Center’s services, ensure alignment with course objectives, and maintain records for each student tutored (e.g., Starfish Outcome Notes, Client Report Forms, Satisfaction Surveys).
- Provides individual Math tutoring for students.
- Assigns practice exercises as needed.
- Mentors students in completion and review of class assignments.
- Assists students in preparing for exams.
- Assists students in developing greater self‑directed learning strategies.
- Creates and maintains a Math‑focused Canvas course shell as a repository of resources.
- Monitors scheduling and documentation through Starfish.
- Maintains detailed records:
Starfish Outcome Notes, Client Report Forms, Satisfaction Surveys, and other assessment measures. - Creates and compiles Math‑focused instructional and marketing materials.
- Develops and delivers workshops, presentations, and online resources on a range of Math topics.
- Provides administrative support for the Chaiken Center for Student Success.
- Serves as liaison to academic departments and related services.
- Performs intentional outreach and interacts directly with under‑served and under‑resourced students.
- Leads/coordinates special projects or initiatives as assigned.
- Collaborates with professors to ensure tutoring complements classroom instruction.
- A Master’s degree (preferred) in Math or a related discipline, 3+ years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Understanding of and familiarity with effective assessment practices focusing on academic support services.
- Excellent written, verbal communication, and presentation skills.
- Innovation and creativity in program development.
- Proven presentation, group facilitation, and teaching skills.
- Extensive ability to collaborate and develop relationships with a wide range of constituents.
- Ability to work with a diverse student population.
- Outstanding teamwork abilities.
- Ability to work late afternoon/early evening and, on occasion, weekend hours.
