Position Purpose

For the 2026-27 school year, Montgomery School is seeking a science teacher to design and deliver outstanding science education for 5th & 6th grades. The teacher will have a strong background in physical, molecular, biological, and environmental sciences as well as an understanding of middle school learners and their needs. The ideal candidate is innovative and collaborative, working closely with the K-8 Science department and in alignment with our school wide values and approaches.

Candidates should possess a love for discovery, inquiry, and the scientific method, and possess a strong interest in sustainability and outdoor learning on our 60 acre campus. The ideal candidate is one who possesses optimism and has an affinity for middle school aged children.

This is a 10 month position and reports directly to the Head of Middle School.

Primary Responsibility

Develop and deliver outstanding science education, engaging and supporting students in 5th and 6th grades both in and out of the classroom.

Specific duties include but are not limited to:

  • Skillfully employ appropriate educational technology in the classroom
  • Differentiate instruction within and across classes, keeping in mind student needs as well as curricular targets for each grade level
  • Use project-based and deeper learning techniques to open avenues for students to apply and demonstrate their learning of foundational scientific concepts and skills.
  • Collaborate with colleagues and positively participate in professional development, adult learning initiatives, and program development opportunities afforded by the school
  • Maintain contact with students and parents through teacher conferences, phone calls, email, and regular updates to the classroom Canvas page, as well as written semester reports twice a year. Be available to meet with students and/or parents before and after school as needed or requested in school or virtually
  • Direct the various phases of work and different activities of your classes; providing classroom instruction, teaching small groups, and individuals as appropriate.
  • Conduct regular assessments of student learning and assign work as appropriate for each grade level.
  • Actively engage with co-curricular opportunities outside of the classroom
  • Actively promote outdoor learning, character education and student focus on authentic engagement
  • Serve as an advisor to a group of middle school students, supporting their academic and social development while fostering character education.
  • Other duties as assigned which support the mission and high functioning of the school.
