Job Definition

This position will provide behavioral interventions and support instructional models in the classroom.

Relationship

The Instructional Associate shall be directly responsible to the Special Programs and Services Supervisor.

Authority

The Instructional Associate will have the authority to perform all functions listed above in accordance with established policies and procedures.

Qualifications
  • Associate’s or Bachelor’s Degree.
  • One year experience in Human Services or Education, preferred.
  • Obtain 06 Substitute Teacher Permit after hire, preferred.

Physical Requirements
  • Ability to stand, bend, stoop, sit, lift, reach, and communicate (vision, hearing, speech) to effectively carry out functions, duties, and responsibilities.
  • Independently ambulate in and around work areas.
  • Travel to and from assigned work locations without employer support.
  • Exhibit appropriate manual dexterity.
  • Conduct safety restraint protocol: normal flexibility; stand, walk, run, shuffle for several minutes; kneel on one or two knees and stand up; bend trunk at 45 degrees and twist; grasp firmly and raise hands above head; learn and demonstrate multi‑step physical skills.
Functions, Duties, and Responsibilities
  • Assist in teaching responsibilities: preparation of instructional and classroom materials, daily attendance recording, and assisting with parent communication systems.
  • Work with students individually and in small groups on academic, developmentally appropriate activities, social interactions, communication, practical life skills, and behavior management.
  • Assist in development and implementation of a behavior plan for individual students.
  • Provide instruction on study skills, behavior management, conflict resolution, anger management, and peer interaction.
  • Work with student and educational staff to provide stabilization and increase student independence.
  • Serve as teacher under an emergency permit when needed and if certified.
  • Monitor students and continue classroom activities if teacher is interrupted.
  • Collaborate with teacher and staff regarding student programming and classroom instruction.
  • Collect data for Medical Assistance logs and IEP/BIP progress reporting.
  • Perform appropriate lifting, positioning, and transferring techniques for students.
  • Monitor/assist students with self‑help skills: personal hygiene, toileting, diapering, clothing, feeding.
  • Operate computer, assistive technology devices, and other technology; implement online curriculum resources; participate in virtual learning platforms.
  • Assist in keeping inventory and ordering materials from warehousing.
  • Escort and assist students as needed to nurse, therapies, general education classes, and special activities.
  • Assist in making contacts for community‑based activities.
  • Monitor outdoor and physical activities and assist bus/van loading and unloading.
  • Assist in implementing emergency evacuation drills and procedures.
  • Contribute to creating a non‑threatening, safe, nurturing environment where students feel respected.
Secondary Duties
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.
