Position Overview
:
The Director of Teaching & Learning is a strategic leader responsible for overseeing and aligning the district's curriculum, instruction, assessment, and professional learning initiatives across all levels (K–12) and subject areas, with direct responsibility for the core academic programs in Math, English Language Arts/Reading, Science, and Social Studies. This position ensures coherence, alignment, and equity across instructional programs and fosters continuous improvement in teaching and learning.
This position develops and communicates the vision of CSD’s curriculum, instruction and assessment.
- Curriculum & Instructional Leadership
- Lead, in conjunction with the Supervisors of Curriculum & Instruction, the district’s curriculum cycle for core academic subjects (Math, ELA, Science, Social Studies) to ensure coherence and alignment with state standards.
- Oversee the development, evaluation, and implementation of instructional materials and resources, ensuring use of high-quality instructional materials (HQIM).
- Provide guidance and oversight for curriculum mapping, course design, and instructional planning across all levels.
- Collaborate with district and school leaders to support Multi-Tiered Systems of Support (MTSS), credit recovery, and academic interventions.
- Professional Learning & Development
- Design, structure, and communicate district professional learning, focusing on legal requirements and district priorities.
- Approve professional learning and conference attendance requests for instructional staff.
- Facilitate leadership development for Supervisors, principals, and teacher leaders.
- Lead professional learning initiatives that align with continuous school improvement and district goals.
- Lead professional learning for building principals regarding curriculum and instruction.
- Assessment & Data Use
- In partnership with Supervisors, Specialists, and the Director of School Services, develop the district-wide assessment calendar.
- Oversee relevant assessment systems (e.g. PVAAS, DRC, eMetrics, etc) and implement the district’s assessment plan.
- Utilize data-informed decision-making to ensure student performance data is used to improve instructional purchases, practices, and outcomes.
- Supervision & Evaluation
- Evaluate Supervisors of Curriculum & Instruction (Elementary, Secondary, Enrichment & Innovation).
- Conduct walkthroughs with Principals and Assistant Principals; participate in formal evaluations as appropriate.
- Provide coaching, mentoring, and oversight of instructional administrators and teacher leaders to ensure fidelity of implementation.
- Support Principals in disciplinary processes for professional staff and attend meetings as necessary.
- Technology & Innovation
- Evaluate and approve requests for instructional materials, including software, digital programs and applications, that support curriculum and instruction.
- Collaborate with IT, the Director of School Services, the Supervisors of Instructional Technology, and the Systems Integration Specialist, and instructional staff to ensure effective integration of technology into teaching and learning.
- Strategic & Programmatic Leadership
- Lead and take ownership of a designated Strategic Plan Pillar, as assigned by the Superintendent.
