Description
Provide instructional assistance to students under the direct supervision of a certified teacher. Assist in preparing, conducting, and managing classroom activities.
Job SummaryAs a Special Education Assistant, you will support classroom instruction, student behavior management, and administrative tasks to create a supportive learning environment.
Responsibilities Instructional Support- Provide instruction to students under the direction of a teacher, working with individual students or small groups.
- Assist teacher in preparing instructional materials and classroom displays.
- Assist with administration and scoring of objective testing instruments or work assignments.
- Help maintain neat and orderly classrooms.
- Help with inventory, care, and maintenance of equipment.
- Help teachers keep administrative records and prepare required reports.
- Provide orientation and assistance to substitute teachers.
- Help supervise students throughout the school day, inside and outside the classroom (lunchroom, bus, playground duty).
- Inform teacher about special needs or problems of individual students.
- Participate in staff development training programs to improve job performance.
- Participate in faculty meetings and special events as assigned.
- Follow district safety protocols and emergency procedures.
- Supervisory Responsibilities:
None. - Tools/Equipment Used:
Standard office equipment, including computer and peripherals; standard instructional equipment. - Posture:
Moderate standing; occasional kneeling, squatting, bending, and stooping. - Motion:
Moderate walking. - Lifting:
Regular light lifting and carrying (less than 15 pounds). - Environment:
Work inside and outside (exposure to sun, heat, cold, inclement weather); exposure to noise. - Working Conditions:
Flexibility in time schedules, maintain emotional control under stress, work with frequent interruptions and deadlines. - Physical Demands:
High physical stamina, repetitive hand motions, strenuous walking, standing, climbing, heavy lifting and carrying (20‑50 pounds), work on uneven surfaces, ladders, and/or scaffolding. - Environmental Factors:
Exposure to hot/cold temperatures, dust, toxic chemicals and materials, occasional prolonged irregular hours, frequent working alone.
- Education/Certification:
High school diploma or GED. Preferably associate's degree or two years of college study. - Experience:
Valid Texas driver's license. - Special Knowledge/
Skills:
Ability to assist in instructing reading, writing, and mathematics. Ability to work well with children. Ability to communicate effectively. Ability to understand detailed written or oral instructions. Team-oriented and self-motivated. Neat in appearance.
