Position: Youth Services Coordinator (Library)
Location: Rohrerstown

Job Title: Youth Services Coordinator

Department: Library

Reports To: Youth Service Manager

Supervisory Responsibilities: May assign tasks to staff and volunteers

Safety Sensitive: No

Classification: Full-time, Non-exempt

Work Environment: Busy public library environment with frequent patron interactions

Summary: The Youth Services Coordinator supports the Youth Services Manager in planning, organizing, and implementing programs and services for youth from infancy through high school. Creates a welcoming and engaging environment that promotes literacy, intellectual freedom, and equal access to information.

Essential Functions

1. Programming
- Assist in the planning of programs and presenting programs, including tween and teen programs, as assigned by the Youth Services Manager

2. Reader's Advisory – Provide guidance to patrons on reading selections based on age, interests, and reading level

3. Customer Service
- Provide excellent customer service by answering questions and assisting with the use of library resources

4. Collection Development – Help maintain an organized, current, and relevant collection by shelving, linking, shelf reading, weeding, and making acquisition recommendations to management

5. Outreach
- Develop relationships with community organizations and educators and participate in outreach activities to promote library services

6. Exercise sound judgment in the enforcement of the Library's Code of Conduct Policy and relay significant issues and patron grievances to management

7. Address safety concerns immediately and bring to management's attention

8. Keep current in all areas of youth services through ongoing continuing education

9. Maintain confidentiality and ethical behavior in all library matters

10. Administration – Coordinate routine administrative operations of the Youth Services Department, including maintaining calendars and schedules, tracking program and outreach statistics, preparing reports, coordinating program registrations and communications, overseeing SRP supplies and statistics, creating promotional materials, and completing other administrative duties as assigned by the Youth Services Manager.

Other Functions

1. Library Website
- Update and maintain the youth services content on the library website under the direction of the Youth Service Manager

2. Technology Assistance – Assist patrons with the use of computers, tablets, e-readers, and other library technologies

3. Perform other duties as assigned

Physical Requirements

1. Ability to stand, sit, and walk for extended periods of time and intermittently

2. Ability to lift 30 pounds, push/pull carts/crates weighing 50 pounds, and shelve materials on high as well as low shelves

3. Dexterity is mandatory as this job requires frequent use of hands and fingers

4. Ability to complete keyboard entry

5. Ability to talk, hear, and see

6. Ability to engage in activities with children, which may involve sitting on the floor, moving around the library, and participating in physical activities

Competencies

1. Strong interpersonal, organizational, and communication skills

2. Basic computer skills including Microsoft Office, Integrated Library System (ILS), email, and internet

3. Enthusiasm for working with children and promoting literacy

4. Awareness of and adherence to best practices in youth services

5. Knowledge of children's and young adult literature

6. Knowledge of child development

7. Ability to work independently and as a member of a team under the leadership of the Youth Services Manager

8. Flexibility in responding to changing priorities

9. Ability to multitask without compromising work quality

10. Flexible schedule, including evenings and weekends based on the needs of the department

Required Education and Experience

Associate degree or high school diploma with experience working with children in a library or educational setting

Preferred Education and Experience

Ability to speak a language in addition to English

Additional Eligibility Requirements

Must pass Pennsylvania Child Abuse History Clearance, Pennsylvania State Police Criminal Record Check, and FBI Fingerprint Based Federal Criminal History Check.
